This may be a really dumb question, but who kinda is responsable for shaping the future of golf. I always thought that was the USGA, but not sure now. I mean the whole article centers around the US Open and distance. Neither have a dang thing to do with growing the game. If anything MORE distance from the average player would help the game. |

Golf is dying. Too many other things to do for kids than play golf for hours on end. If their friends don't play it's a definite no on golf. A few will always play, but the middle and upper-middle class kids enjoy doing other things. Growth is in the over 40 crowd that can no longer compete in athletic events like they used to compete.
It's an elitist sport now more than ever.
This is all opinion folks.

I agree, for example The public course by my house was a nice convienant 9 hole walk as my kids and their sports just are time consuming, that and the economy has really hurt me, yet they raised the walking rate from $12 to $19. Am I really going to walk 9 holes at a muni for that price? I USED to play 18 on the same course for $20 (its now $36. Most the courses in my area dont allow walking, many dont even offer 9 holes. They seem to be empty but for Jan through April. |

The USGA has a huge economic/social problem that I'm not sure will ever be fixed. Golf has changed forever IMO and it isn't getting easier or cheaper to play.

The problem to me is the built these very expensive and difficult courses to maintain which only adds costs and time to play. I like playing awesome courses, but does everyone of them need to be like the Ritz? Very bad precident was set. |

Agreed. 6,000 yard courses should be the norm! Much more fun anyway.

Here on Long Island, NY I am limitted in options... 1. Join a private club, which I can't afford... despite my wife and I both earning a nice income. The property taxes on my three bedroom/two bath, half-acre "estate" are $11,000 per year. That's a mortgage payment elsewhere. Need I say more? 2. Play six hour weekend rounds at the local muni. Not 5 hour rounds... SIX. 3. Wake up at 4am and try to be the first one off the tee, or sleep over the night before in the parking lot (ie Bethpage Black). I choose #3 because that's the ONLY way I can play in an affordable manner, both time and money. Oh, and to walk 18 on a weekend at my local f'ing dogtrack is $36. |

Sheeesh with the horror stories. I guess I'm fortunate to have decent courses and rates in Tucson. Summer can be a real bitch though.

Some guys should just stay as OC or DC.
Norv is a great OC IMO. Horrible head coach. Smith seemed like an egomaniac as well. Never should have left Brees or VJ leave.

cloran - I would quit the game. That doesn't sound like much fun. Nah... If I haven't given up yet I never will. I'm a golfing masochist. I was at the range today, 20* with a wind chill putting things at about 10*. The "heated bays" worked about as well as my swing. |

You are a warrior! I drove by a course today with the flags tilted 45* because of the wind and I thought that if I was forced to hit balls outside I would die. I try to avoid playing golf under 60*.
