We haven't realy talked about this, yet. I think a lot of this has to do with the show not being as good as we thought it could be and there being little in the way of anything informative.
With my past health problems, friends and family tend to take exception to the show because Daly's problems were brought on by himself. However, I don't think drug and alcohol addiction is something to take lightly nor is it a simple fix.
And to Daly's credit, a long time ago he told people to not feel sorry for him and his problems when former caddy Jeff 'Squeeky' Medlin had passed away from leukemia and led a very clean life.
Where I do feel sorry for Daly is that I am convinced his upbringing is the reason why he acts the way he does. From what I've read and heard, his parents were often times traveling between Arkansas and California, in large part to his dad's job, and after awhile they just had to make a decision and let his older brother take care of John. In fact, I heard once he was kicked out of an AJGA event at the age of 15 when he was found drinking a bottle of Jack Daniels out of his bag.
I think he certainly pissed away his potential. Here's a guy that was a downright phenom after winning the PGA. And most people don't realize just how long he was. He was easily 30 yards longer than any other guy on the PGA Tour. These days we see golfers that are enormously long off the tee, but even say JB Holmes can hit drives right up there with Bubba Watson. Then there's golfers like Robert Garrigus, Dustin Johnson, etc that are right up there as well. Back when Daly was playing...it was him and nobody else even close. Watch the final round of his PGA Championship win, he's blowing it by Kenny Knox (granted, a short hitter) by 80 yards a drive.
His game back then was hit it further past any other golfer in the field and hit about 50% of the fairways. He did have the ability to play a ton of shots, as shown in his British Open victory. But if he was having a pretty good day putting and if he was driving pretty well that week, he was going to be in contention.
The problem now is I don't see that game. He's probably a top 10 golfer in distance still, but he's not clearly outdriving the field. And he's still wild off the tee. And now he's not putting well.
Personally, I'd still like to see him succeed. But I get the feeling that he's 'worn out his welcome' with most fans.
