Course: Walkabout GC
Stimp: 9
Weather: 75*, wind at 12-20 mph
Ball: Titleist Pro V1x
I shot 72 the day before at the new course up in The Villages called Evans Prairie. I think it's the best design in The Villages. Hit the ball well, but couldn't make any putts. So today I went to Walkabout and wanted to try my luck there. This would be the first round at Walkabout with my new irons.
#1: Decent driver that ended up in a good spot. Flushed a 6-iron to 20-feet. A weird putt thru some hills and 2-putted for par (E)
#2: This is such a weird tee shot because it's so hard to get a feel for where the fairway is with the blind tee. I caught this with a bit of a closed face. I thought I would be in the left fairway bunker. Instead, I was down the middle and pretty long. I hit driver off the deck from a bit of a downhill lie. I hit it well but was playing for a cut and it didn't cut. Still ended up fine. A little flop to 5-feet and made the birdie (-1)
#3: Flushed a 4-iron into the wind. 193 yards to the hole into a 2-3 club wind...so the distance with that Dynalite Gold SL shaft is just fine. Made a 10-footer for the birdie (-2)
#4: Smoked a driver down the middle I hit the hybrid hard, but pulled it into the water. Dropped and hit on. 2-putted for double. (E)
#5: Good driver down the middle. Hit a LW a little light, but it rolled up to 3-feet and made birdie (-1)
#6: Poor swing and pushed this drive out to the right and into the woods. I actually had a clear shot, but the cart path is elevated from where I was, so I had to get the ball up quickly to avoid the hill that leads up to the cart path.
I hit 7-iron to do so and had the right club. But, it hit the slope next to the trap and rolled into the bunker. Decent bunker shot to 8-feet, just missed the par save (E)
#7: Flushed another 4-iron, this time just short of the green (207 yards into the wind). Rule of 12 chip (PW) to a foot and kicked in for par (E)
#8: Decent driver that went pretty far with the wind. Tried to hit window 9 with a 9-iron and instead hit window 7 with the tight lie and sucked it back a few yards. 2-putted from 30-feet for par (E)
#9: Good drive down the middle. Decent lie, but too far downhill for me to hit driver off the deck. So I hit 3-wood and I was glad I did since I couldn't make very good contact, but was able to advance the ball nicely towards the hole. Little flop shot to a foot and kicked in for birdie (-1)
#10: Made a mistake here and hit the drive into the gulley which has ultra thick rough. Just hacked it up there short of the green. Almost made the chip shot and made par (-1)
#11: This hole is tough because of the distance and forced carry. But it's even tougher with heavy wind and the tee box crooked to the green. I pushed a 4-iron into the right bunker. Pretty good bunker shot, but I keep pulling these bunker shots. Just missed a 7-foot par save and made bogey (E)
#12: A so-so driver off the tee into the fairway. Flushed the hybrid to 30-feet and 2-putted for par (E)
#13: Left a drive out to the right on the cart path. Hit a hybrid to about 180 yards. I then hit 5-iron that I pushed and left myself with a 60-foot putt. Had the line on the first putt, but was well short. Then I sunk the 6-footer to save par (E)
#14: Hit this drive well, but pushed it and into the woods. Dropped and hit a 7-iron from a nasty lie short. Chipped on and then 2-putted for double (+2)
#15: Tried to hit window 9 with an 8-iron. Pulled it into the left bunker. Another pulled bunker shot. But, I made a 10-footer to save par (+2)
#16: Slipped on my downswing and hit a bit of a hook that went pretty well and in the fairway. Hit a 8-iron to 30-feet and sank a nice double breaker for birdie (+1)
#17: Busted this drive quite nicely up the middle. Hit a driver off the deck a little fat, but it went about 250 yards. Hit a pitch shot to 7-feet, but couldn't make the birdie putt (+1)
#18: Good driver down the middle. Flushed a 9-iron to 10-feet. Too much speed on the putt and made par (+1)
THOUGHTS: Tough round because I made 5 birdies and still shot +1. I have been losing some of the stuff in my swing I've been working on in the back 9. But, I struck the ball pretty well. I just had way too many impeded shots.
