Course: Walkabout GC
Stimp: 9
Weather: 88°, 10-12 mph wind
Ball: Titleist Pro V1x
Played Walkabout today after a tough round in 30 mph winds on Saturday in The Villages. I recently assembled a new 3-iron together. It's the 575MMC, but with a True Temper Dynalite Gold SL shaft like my 4-iron; to get the Balance Index to match. I also went back to my standard length Edel putter and left the belly Edel at home.
#1: into the wind, but I hit a nice drive down the middle. Left with a tough lie in the fairway with the ball well below my feet. Hit a 5-iron hard, but pushed it into the the water. Dropped. Pulled a LW to the left fringe and made a crazy 30-footer for bogey (+1)
#2: A little closed face pull-draw into the fairway bunker. Hit a 7-iron out of the bunker. I couldn't see the green with the mogul there and I missed the green with a 9-iron. Chipped on to 7-feet and made the par save (+1)
#3: So-so 5-iron that found the green to 25-feet. Good putt and made par (+1)
#4: Pulled one that bounced into the hazard. Dropped. Hit a 5-iron nicely onto the green. 2-putted for bogey (+2)
#5: Good driver down the middle. Had a very tight lie and hit a SW that sucked back a bit to 20-feet. 2-putted for par (+2)
#6: Decent drive in perfect position. Tried a soft PW that I pulled a tad, but only 15 feet away for birdie. Chipped to 3-feet and made the comebacker for par. (+2)
#7: Well, here's a good test. 212 yard par-3 into a 1-club wind. Flush a 3-iron 205 yards, 5 yards of roll. Made the birdie putt (+1)
#8: Hit the drive hard, but it found the fairway bunker. Hit a real nice shot to 15-feet. Not a very good putt, but I made par (+1)
#9: Lots of wind behind us and I crushed one down the middle. Had a rough lie, so I just hit my hybrid...thinking about advancing the ball short of the green and trying to make birdie. Instead, the ball rolled all the way to the greenside bunker. Decent bunker shot to 15-feet (50 yard bunker shot) and I 2-putted for par (+1)
#10: Decent drive down the middle. Hit a PW to the front part of the green. Good 2-putt from a difficult position (+1)
#11: Pushed my 3-iron a little, but it went over the green into the collection area. Hit a pitch shot to 6-feet and made par (+1)
#12: I hit this okay and with the wind I only went about 245 yards. The problem is it's a 475 yard par-4...into the wind. I was in the fairway and had a pretty good lie, but yanked the hell out of a 3-wood. I then had a terrible lie and I just hit a prayer to a shot where I could only see the top of the flag....to 3-feet. Made par (+1)
#13: Pretty good drive down the middle here. Crushed a driver off the deck. Then a SW from a tight lie sucked back again. it landed 3-feet from the cup, but spun back to about 12-feet. Missed the putt and made par (+1)
#14: Not a very good swing and missed the fairway. But, I ended up in good position. Hit a 6-iron to 25-feet and 2-putted for par (+1)
#15: Decent 8-iron pin-high just off the green. Chip to a few inches and made par (+1)
#16: Not a very good swing, but the drive ended up okay. A blind approach shot that went to the fringe. A weak chip, but a good putt from 8-feet to save the par (+1)
#17: Good drive down the middle. I then hit a driver off the deckt that I killed, but pulled it a bit. There's a long bunker that runs down the left side and I missed left of that bunker. I had about 45 yards and knocked it in for eagle. Great shot (-1)
#18: Hit this drive well. Unfortunately, it landed in a wet area and got no roll. Tried to hit a sky-rocket 8-iron to a front pin, but I pulled it. It hit the side of the green and went into the water. Dropped. Almost made another 40 yard pitch shot and made the putt for bogey.
THOUGHTS: A pretty wild round since I went into the water 3 different times and found 2 fairway bunkers and still shot even par. I liked my putting with the standard sized Edel. Need to work out some kinks in the swing this week.
