I'm sure he will get some backlash for the 'I'm an artist, not a wholesaler' comments in the past. But, the entire starving artist gig grows tired after a while and in the end you wind up wanting to be the guy that just went double platinum.
I'm interested in how Titleist will approach this. I think many of his designs may be too exotic for much of the Titleist customer base which tends to prefer a more conservative look. The old 'Z' blades and cavities really didn't do that well when they came out and the company went back to more tradition looking clubs and did much better.
I saw one wedge made by JP for Titleist where it said he was the 'Scotty Cameron of Wedges.' Honestly, I think JP is much better at wedge design than Scotty Cameron is at putter design. There's nothing overly creative about Cameron's putter designs, much of which Geoff Mangum eschews and discusses how bad the designs are. I think Vokey is a much better at wedge design than Cameron is at putter design. But, Cameron had a good eye for aethstics and giving the putters that classical look which again, fits right into loyal Titleist customers.
I am willing to bet that the retail wedges will have a fairly classic look with a little JP influence. Maybe a tad difference in design to appeal to customers that there's something different from Vokey wedges besides aesthetics. And then most of his creative side will be shown in the Wedgeworks department.
Anyway, congratulations to JP and best of luck on his future with Titleist.
