At Olde Atlanta Club, a course I tend to struggle on. The greens are very difficult and they just aerated them 2 weeks ago. It's also got a few holes that are very tight and require more or less a 3-wood off the tee and the 3-wood is probably the worst club in my bag. The group I play with usually gets a 'mini-shotgun', so I got to start on #18. Weather was nice. Course just came off 4 days of heavy rain and was *dryer*, but not a lot of grass on the fairways.
#18 - Nice driver in a perfect spot. Had a 4-iron into the green over water on a downhill lie where there wasn't much grass. Hindsight I should've laid up with a 7-iron. But I went for it and caught it thin and knocked it in the water. Hit a pretty good shot from the drop area, which usually calls for it to land short of the green and roll on. But it stuck on the fringe from the wet ground and then I made a really good 2 putt from 40 feet (+1)
#1 - Solid driver down the right side. Hit a 4-iron into a green that I usually need a 7-iron into during the summer. Put it on the green and almost made the 25 footer for birdie (+1)
#2 - Decent driver that found the right side of the green. Hit a good 7-iron into the green and had the club, but was probably 1 yard off from being a great shot. Instead it stuck up on the fringe. Chipped the ball a tad hard, but made the 4 foot comebacker (+1)
#3 - Probably hit a 4-iron as good as I have ever hit one. It was as flush as it gets. Had a 15 footer for birdie, missed the putt. Putterface opened up a bit. When I start to work on my putting stroke a bit more, I'm going to work on eliminating opening my putter facer (+1)
#4 - Good drive down the middle. Hit a decent 9-iron to about 15-20 feet. Made the birdie putt (E)
#5 - Good drive in good position. Hit a 3-wood left of the green and had a 40 yard pitch. We were moving them in the fairways, but playing them down in the rough. I had a big chunk of mud on the ball and hit a shot that just died down and left. Left me with a 20 foot putt and I 2-putted. (E)
#6 - Hit a good hybrid off the tee, but because of the muddy conditions, my ball stopped where it landed and there's trees you have to get around and I couldn't get around them. I actually hit a 2nd shot about 100 times better than I ever though I could as the ball was laying on mud, with a big gob of mud on it and I had to hit a big slice around the trees. I hit a 7-iron and thought my chances of hitting it well were slim and if I did hit it well, I was afraid it would duck hook into the water because of the mud on the ball.
Anyway, I hit it well with a nice fade, just short of the green. But a poor chip off of a muddy lie and a 2-putt and I get a bogey (+1)
#7 - Good driver down the middle. Got too indecisive about the club to hit, so I choked up a bit on a 9-iron and pulled it a bit and missed the green left. Then a lousy chip with a SW and a 2-putt (+2)
#8 - Nice 9-iron to about 15 feet, just missed the birdie (+2)
#9 - Hit the 3-wood good, but a pull draw put me into the woods. Need to hit hybrid off that tee. Punched out a 7-iron. Caught LW fat and short of the green. 2-putted for bogey. Really need to get some new wedges because they are wayyy too upright for me (+3)
#10 - Good driver down the right side. Had a 9-iron on a downhill, muddy lie. Hit it thin. 2-putted from 25 feet. (+3)
#11 - Good hybrid off the tee and then hit a 9-iron into the green and 2-putted from 20 feet. (+3)
#12 - A little too much draw on a driver and found the rough and a tough lie. Knocked a 5-iron up the fairway. Hit a nice 8-iron on the green but it backed up about 12 feet off the slope. 2-putted from 20-25 feet. (+3)
#13 - Hit a 6-iron to the green that I hit alright. A little too much draw and it wound up between the bunker and the green. Another mediocre chip and missed the 6-footer coming back (+4)
#14 - Good driver down the middle. In the summer time my second shot would've been close, but here it stuck into the green. 2-putted from 20 feet (+4)
#15 - Well placed driver down the left side. In between clubs and choked up on a 6-iron and fired it at the flag, but 30 feet past. 2-putted from there. (+4)
#16 - Hit a 5-iron well, but it didn't draw like I expected it to and went into the bunker. Good bunker shot and kicked it in for par (+4)
#17 - Toe hooked a driver into the left rough. Nice 8-iron into the green and 2-putted from 20 feet. (+4)
Overall some promising signs here because I played OAC pretty well for me from a ballstriking perspective. A lot of the poor shots I tend to hit where not prevalent. Usually I struggle badly on holes 1-6 and I was even on these holes and hit 4 out of the 6 greens and the 2 greens I missed were hittable if not for the course conditions.
38-37 = 75 (+4)
11/14 fairways
11/18 GIR
33 putts
2/5 scramble
