At Smoke Rise GC, a 142 slope. Greens in excellent shape on the backside, poor shape on the front side. This is a course that is a definition of Atlanta golf over the years. Used to cost $50K to join. They created a monster of a clubhouse and the tennis courts are beautiful and everything but the course is beautiful. The course itself is an okay design, but it's in rough shape and eventually the corporation that owns the courses I play at has taken over the management side of things and I can play there on weekdays for $25 which includes a cart (you need one for this course).
We started off of #10 today.
#10 - Good driver right down the middle. Tried to lay up with a 5-iron as it's really tight on the second shot. Hit a good shot, but found a fairway bunker I didn't know was there (I've only played here twice). Had 83 yards to the approach, in a fairway bunker, with my feet not in the bunker. Hit it to 15 feet. Lipped out the birdie (E)
#11 - Caught a 5-iron a little thin and went into the bunker short. Probably not a regulation pin placement, but I hit the bunker shot on and 2-putted from 10 feet (+1)
#12 - Good driver perfectly up the left side. Hit 6-iron well from an uphill lie, but need about 2 extra clubs. 2-putted from 65 feet. Two pretty good putts there. (+1)
#13 - 631 yard par-5 into the wind. Hit a driver with a little too much draw and went into the left rough. Good hybrid from a tricky lie. Hit 4-iron but the grip slipped on the downswing and caught it a little thin and on the toe and went into the front bunker. Almost knocked in the bunker shot and kicked in for par (+1)
#14 - Poor swing with a 8-iron and was well short. Probably didn't have enough club anyway. Hit what I thought was a good chip to an awful pin placement, but it checked up. 2-putted from 12 feet. (+2)
#15 - Good 3-wood down the left side, but with a tough lie well above my feet. Decent 7-iron to 30 feet and 2-putted (+2)
#16 - Okay driver down the right side. Great 3-wood over the ditch. Hit a wedge a bit chunky because they are too upright, but wound up to 12 feet, made the birdie putt...good read because it broke a ton (+1)
#17 - 5-iron to about 10 feet. Decent shot. The ABS modules allow for that decent swing to turn out really well. Made the putt...two birdies in a row (E)
#18 - Hit the driver well, but pushed it into the right fairway bunker. Then hit a GREAT 5-iron out of the bunker and I figured it would be close. But I had too much club because it went right over the pin. I thought I hit a good chip, but it grabbed the fringe and kicked down the slope to about 7 feet. Then lipped out a putt that I thought was going in. (+1)
#1 - Toe drawed a hybrid off the tee. Had to punch out. Then hit a 9-iron on my 3rd shot to 12 feet. Hit a putt where i wanted to, but it never really broke (+2)
#2 - Big, perfect drive in about as good of a position as I could hit one. Debated going for it, but with the dormant grass and it being a tough shot, I laid up to about 87 yards. Tough pin position (very front part of the green) and had too much club with a SW. 2-putted from 30 feet. (+2)
#3 - Mediocre swing with a 7-iron that was thinned a bit and still found the green. 3-putted from about 50 feet (+3)
#4 - Excellent 3-wood on a hole that is a bit ridiculous. Hit 7-iron to 25 feet. Poor speed on the first putt, made a really good read and sunk the second putt from about 8 feet away. (+3)
#5 - Hit hybrid off the tee right to the 150. Tough lie with the 7-iron and played for the middle of the green. 2-putted from there (+3)
#6 - Driver a little left of where I was playing, but the wet ground stopped it in the fairway. Hit a great hybrid on the second shot. Wedge to an elevated green was struck well, but well short of the back pin. Good 2-putt from 50 feet. (+3)
#7 - Drew a 4-iron too much to the left side of the green. 3-putted from 40 feet (+4)
#8 - Good hybrid down the left side. Hit an okay 9-iron, but mis-clubbed (barely) and found the bunker. Hit a good bunker shot to 5 feet and made the sandy. (+4)
#9 - Good driver down the right side. This is a 440 yard par-4, DEAD UPHILL. Had 200 yards into the green and hit a really good hybrid to the front right. Unfortunately, this is a gigantic green and the pin was back left. Paced off a 108 foot birdie putt. UGH. Pretty good 1st putt to 7 feet. Then lipped out the par putt. (+5)
I think playing in Georgia is very difficult because there's plenty of water, trees, and wind. However the difficulty is in the hilly terrain because if you are not real familiar with the course you're playing, you can mis-club yourself all day. I thought I didn't have my 'A Game' swing, but probably a solid C to B game and just couldn't get anything close with the club selection. Putted well outside of the 3-putts on monster putts which tells me that my putting woes are just due to poor greens. Still have a lot of putts that I put them right where anybody would want to put them that miss.
37-40=77(+5)
10/13 Fwy
12/18 GIR
36 putts
2/5 Scramble
I will be playing tomorrow.
