Red pill: Your drives go 230y consistently and you hit 80% of your fairways. Dead center. Blue pill: Your drives go 280y consistently and you hit 20% of your fairways. Miss by miles... in both directions.
Neither pill makes you bigger or smaller, neither pill makes you harder or softer, and if you ask Alice about them she'll have no clue.
FTR: I'll take the red pill.

New course I've joined is tree lined and short - so red all day long (I'm building a 12 degree 43.5 driver - with this intention right now...)

I've been doing a lot of reading on golf course architecture, and if you're on a strategic course, down the middle might be the WORST place to be. But if the red pill is 230 straight to where I want to place my ball, that sounds pretty good to me as long as I'm on the right set of tees.

I was thinking about this a bit more, and started to realize how boring golf would be if you had to make a choice like this. A good chunk of what I find fascinating about golf is the randomness. Sometimes good, a lot of times not so good, but the not so good sets up the opportunity for a memorable recovery.
Besides, there's nothing saying that you couldn't just walk your ball out 230 from the tee, put it down and play from there. In fact, there are courses that are essentially just this: executive courses. And while they have their place, they're certainly not as fun as the real deal.

I dunno, pavaveda, even in this construct you still have 20% of your shots that aren't in the middle of the fairway so one out of five shots could be memorable.
For me, i think the answer depends on what "miss by miles" means. I assume it means OB and lost balls which are the killer of my scores so I'd do pretty much anything to avoid that. conversely, it's not like i can't hit a three-wood OB as well so on some days, i have the worst of both worlds - short and crooked.....

dhc1, you're right. I had ignored the percentages. So, with the percentages, it definitely makes it a harder choice, but the 280 miss by miles seems too drastic, so I'd probably stick with the 230/80% choice.
