At Windermere, the weather was good enough so I played the tips. I usually play the tips, but with the weather we have been having lately, the 'Love' tees play as long as the tips. But today I played the tips. The greens were aerated back on Monday. Weather was nice, a little breezy. Grass was dormant bermuda. I used the Apex PC's today.
#1 - Good drive down the right side of the fairway. Hit 5-iron flush but a little too much club and found the backside of the green. 2-putted nicely from 40 feet. (E)
#2 - Flush 3-wood to about 20 feet. 2-putted for par (E)
#3 - Perfect driver down the middle. Hit a 3-wood decent, but the direction was excellent. Hit the hill short of the green and plugged, otherwised I could have had a shot at eagle. Chipped up to 5 feet and made the birdie. (-1)
#4 - Toe hooked a driver in the left rough by a tree. Hit a great 8-iron under the tree on the green. 2-putted from 40 feet (-1)
#5 - Decent 6-iron on the green. Drilled a 30 footer for birdie (-2)
#6 - hit the driver well, but push faded it a bit and went into the creek. Hit 8-iron onto the green and 2-putted for bogey (-1)
#7 - Fat, pull hook almost into the creek with a 6-iron. Had a great lie and treated the shot like a bunker shot and knocked it to 6-feet, made the putt for the save (-1)
#8 - Good driver down the right side of the fairway. Caught a 4-iron flush to the middle of the green. 2-putted from 30 feet (-1)
#9 - Good driver down the middle followed by a good 3-wood. Hit a SW that drawed on me because the wedges are too upright.
On another forum, one poster who likes to take potshots at people quoted Jackie Burke as saying that Hogan hit 'heel cuts' with his irons. Even after it was pointed out that Hogan's irons and the vintage irons there have the COG more toward the heel...which expert Tom Wishon told me was true on Wishon's forum. But, this poster claims that Hogan hit 'heel cuts' because Burke was in Hogan's 'inner circle.'
To claim Hogan hit heel cuts is idiotic, and this shot with the SW showed why. I left a mark ever so slightly toward the toe, but because the clubs are so upright for me, the shot with a SW died like it had been shot. There's simply no way a guy like Hogan hit the shots like he did without catching the sweetspot and the reason why his wear marks were towards the heel on his clubs was because that's where the sweetspot was. If he mis-hit those irons, his shots would not be as accurate or as powerful.
But, what does Tom Wishon know about clubhead designs.
Anyway, wound up 2-putting from 20 feet as the ball caught the tier and rolled back down (-1)
#10 - Good driver down the middle. Hit PW, but the wind knocked it down a bit and left me with a 20 foot putt. 2-putted from there. (-1)
#11 - Poor swing with a 4-iron. Almost knocked in a tough pitch, but missed the 5 foot putt (E)
#12 - Decent driver down the right side. Another poor swing with a 6-iron and missed short. Pitched on and 2-putted from 12 feet (+1)
#13 - Good driver on this hole with a small draw. Problem is it's a dogleg right and I probably lost about 20 yards because of that draw. Hit a good 6-iron, but the face must've been wide open and I missed right. Hit a good flop to 5 feet and made a great save (+1)
#14 - Toe hook into the left fairway bunker. Hit 5-iron out to 140 yards. Hit a 9-iron on an uphill lie to about 30 feet. The shot was struck well, but drew because of the uphill lie. However the pin was tucked to the right and there's water right so I couldn't go for the pin (+1)
#15 - Good driver down the middle. I worked on trying to keep the ball below the cup and hit an 8-iron instead of a 7-iron. 8-iron went well, but caught the slope and rolled down. 2-putted nicely from 40 feet. (+1)
#16 - I hate this hole. Stupid hole. I hit a good driver and the ball winds up being 180 yards away with the ball about knee level. Thanks for the dumbest hole ever, Davis Love. Anyway made a double bogey (+3)
#17 - Mediocre 7-iron onto the green. 2-putted from 40 feet (+3)
#18 - Good driver down the middle. Couldn't go for it, so I punched a 5-iron to 110 yards. Hit a 9-iron into the wind to 10 feet. Lipped out the putt (+3)
Started out well hitting the first 5 greens, but only hit 7 of the next 13. So-so driving day. Need to work on getting more endurance. Putted well. Gotta say, it's CRUCIAL to keep the ball below the cup as much as you can when you're playing aerated greens. Downhill putts almost never go in on aerated greens. I focused on that today and it's a big reason why I made a lot of good 3-6 footers.
