I don’t follow women’s golf that much. I pretty much stopped once Dottie Pepper stopped playing. Not only was she a NY girl (unfortunately, she’s a Red Sox fan), but she is the sister-in-law of a friend of mine.
I never really got into the Annika era. I was never that impressed with her swing and if anything, she just seemed to out-putt the rest of the girls. I was interested in the Michelle Wie era because I believe her swing and athleticism at the age of 13 was enough to compete on the men’s level. To me, it’s the largest travesty in sports the past 20 years that Michelle Wie has developed into the player she is.
Oddly, I do like watching the women’s version of the Big Break.
So that brings us to Brittany Lincicome. I saw her hit balls at the Demo Day for the PGA Merchandise Show a couple of years ago. She may hit it a little past me. I know that the avg. female club head speed is about 95 mph and they tend to hit well up on the ball. I’m guessing Brittany is at about 105-110 mph. Her tendency was to hit a lower, tumbling pull draw when she missed.
She has a very strong left handed grip and has the clubface a little hooded. This helps de-loft the clubface and get it pointing left. While my dad doesn’t hover the club head, this is what his clubface looks like. But, my dad plays an over-the-top cut. He needs the clubface closed to some degree to counter his leftward path. Given Brittany tends to favor a draw and had mis-hits that were slight pull, low tumbling draws…this clubface position at p1 plays into that. What I’ve found on Trackman and FlightScope with these shots is that the path may be 0 to +2 degrees right, but the face is about 2-3 degrees closed.
She has some foot flare with the left foot, but the right foot is square. This will affect the hip turn in the backswing which can affect how the arms and hands move as they go into p4.
We can start to see her hips move a little forward already. I think this is partly caused by the lack of right foot splay. I would like to see her posture from DTL as well. If she has the ‘flat spine’ posture, I find this tends to move the hips forward like she does here.

And here we see the pelvis CoG well forward. The main issue I have with this is that it is very difficult to get the hip motion to unwind like you would want to. I’ve had problems with this ‘reverse hips’ look in the past and it can really throw off any semblance of sequence and make it difficult to not have the Center of Pressure more towards your back foot at impact.
The good news is that if she can manage to get the hip motion down correctly, she can just start unwinding the hips since her pelvis CoG is already forward.
Her clubface is pointing at the sky. Of course, what matters is the relationship of the clubface angle to the lead forearm angle from the DTL view. So you can’t tell for sure from the caddy view. But, I feel that she is likely very closed given this hip motion and square right foot. The hips will stop rotating too soon in the backswing and the lead arm and hands have nowhere to go upward. So her lead arm is likely upright with a clubface pointing at the sky which is closed.
I like this move from p4 to p5.3-ish quite a bit. The hips are also level here. Tough to do with that hip position at p4, but she does it. The other thing I like is that she lags is well without narrowing the hand path radius. That’s how you use that lag to hit the ball long instead of ‘faking’ the lag by narrowing the hand path radius. It should also allow her to hit up on the ball to some degree. I find when the hand path radius narrows, it’s chop-down city for me.
I like this a lot. She still has some right arm flex, everything is tilted and turned nicely. I haven’t watched a lot of women’s golf in person, but I don’t recall her hitting it that high. Probably a mid-flight trajectory at best.
Everything is forward, very much like Arnold Palmer and he wasn’t exactly a high ball hitter.
