Course: Walkabout GC
Stimp: 7
Weather: 72 degrees, cloudy, 1-2 club wind
Ball: Titleist Pro V1x and Bridgestone 330-S
Equipment: Wishon woods, Wishon 575 irons, Edel wedges, original Edel putter.
I’ve been striking the ball really well lately to the point where I would say it is arguably the best I’ve struck the ball since my junior golf days. I think the only difference is that in my junior golf days I was more consistent. But, I think now I hit more shots flush or just hit the driver as well as I can possibly hit it.
This has been a lousy winter and Spring in Florida. It has been a little cool out, but more rainy than anything. In years past, we would hardly get any rain from January thru April. In fact, I feel like it has rained more during this January thru April than the previous 3 years of that timeframe, combined. This has made for some lackluster conditions. Walkabout’s greens and tees are solid, but the fairways are awful. Really spotty.
Anyway, I’ve been striking the ball really well and putting much better since I got my own indoor putting green. The only issue I have is usually 2-4 holes stymie me from having a great round.
I’ve also started to play different tees at Walkabout instead of playing the tips on every hole. Some of the tips at Walkabout are just ridiculous. So I’ve made the track about 7,000 yards instead of 7,200 yards and it has made the course much more fun for me.
#1: I played the tees up here. I hit a decent driver down the middle. The pin was cut to the right where the water comes into play, but the wind was blowing hard left. I aimed for the middle of the green and the wind took my 7-iron and I missed left. A mediocre chip to 15-feet and I 2-putted for bogey. (+1)
#2: I played the back tees here. I hit a good drive down the middle. I then tried to lay up, but I hooked by hybrid into the fairway bunker. There was a huge lip on this fairway bunker, so I just tried to get my Lob Wedge out of the bunker. I was about 90 yards away and I didn’t expect to get it there with just a lob wedge, but it did…to about 15-feet. Just burned the edge and made par (+1)
#3: I tried the 7-wood here. I hit a mediocre shot the front of the green. I have hit the 7-wood with the Aerotech shaft well on the range, but struggle with it on the course. I had about a 40-foot putt. I misread the break, but had perfect speed. I then missed a hard breaking 3-footer that I couldn’t believe broke so much. (+2)
#4: I played the tees up here and the wind was in our face. I hit a mediocre drive that ended up okay. I then hit a 7-wood mediocre to the right of the green. I then found…a decent sized alligator on the back of the green. That will motivate you to not chip this one to the back of the green!
I chipped my sand wedge to about 5-feet and made the par save (+2)
#5: Hit this one well, but I could be hitting hooks for a year straight and get on this hole and hit a push fade into the trees. I found my ball, took an unplayable and then hit a LW to the front edge of the green. 2-putted and made bogey (+3)
#6: Toe-hook that ended up in good position. I pulled my Sand Wedge to 30 feet. I read 3% of slope and it was 4% of slope, but ended up close and tapping in for par. (+3)
#7: I played these tees up because this hole is utterly ridiculous. And I still had a 4-iron with a tailwind. I flushed it, but just missed the green right. The problem is that there is a huge hump on the right side of the green and the cup is on the other side of the hump. So I couldn’t get the chip close as it ran 10-feet bye. But, I made the par save (+3)
#8: Crushed a driver down the middle. Flushed a PW to the back of the green and just missed the birdie putt from 20 feet. (+3)
#9: Kinda ‘stepped in the bucket’ on this swing, but the ball went well with a tailwind and low spin. I only had 250 yards into the green. I try to hit driver off the deck and I crush it. But, I crushed it right up next to the fence. I punch out, hit my next shot to 12-feet and make bogey (+4)
#10: Crush a driver down the middle here and only have a LW into the cup. I had about 75 yards (roughly a 335 yard drive) into the hole. I decided to take a full swing LW, but at half the power. I lipped out the shot and tapped in for birdie (+3)
#11: I played the tees forward here. Sometimes if it gets too windy or if the pollen is in the air or the flag is shaded, the Bushnell Rangefinder won’t pick up the flag. It claimed I only had 175 yards into the hole, but I went well short with a 7-iron with a tailwind. I chipped up nicely to 4-feet and saved the par (+3)
#12: I played the tees up here since this is a 480 yard par-4 from the back tees into the wind. I hit a decent driver that went down the middle followed by a mediocre 7-wood short of the green. I chipped up to 5-feet, but left myself with a hard-breaking downhill putt. I made the par save (+3)
#13: Bombed a driver here. Could not hit it any better for me. I then bombed a driver off the deck as well as I could. I only had 60 yards into the hole on a 580 yard par-5 into the wind. I didn’t have enough gas on the LW into the green and left myself with a 20-footer which I hit the lip and made par (+3)
#14: Smashed a driver down the right side and just into the rough. Flushed a 7-iron to 25-feet. I didn’t quite make the right read, but my touch was good and I made par (+3)
#15: I had 159 yards to a front flag. This hole always plays a little longer than it says. I hit my 8-iron about 158 yards normally. But, the ball is also not flying as far due to the humidity and the cooler air. However, I also have a tailwind.
The main concern is that if you miss short, you not only end up in a front bunker, but it is a pot bunker. But, if you miss long, you have a treacherous downhill putt. I decided to go with the 8-iron using the ‘if I take an average swing at it, I should be okay’ principle. Instead, I flushed it and ended up 17-feet to the hole just short of the green. I chipped it and it hit the flag and bounced out (hit it too hard). And I then made par (+3)
#16: Hit a decent driver down the left side. I only had 117 yards, but the wind was going into my face again. So I took a full swing PW with 75% power and flushed it to 15-feet. This was another one of those putts that is right on a ridge, so it can break either way. That’s what mine did, but I had good speed and was able to 2-putt and make par (+3)
#17: Killed a driver down into the right rough. Flushed another driver off the deck that took a terrible kick. I was pin-high, but I had a wicked shot because of how the green sloped. I thought I hit a decent lob shot, but it went off to the fringe. I then made the 15-foot birdie putt (+2)
#18: Pretty good driver down the middle. This is a difficult approach shot because the green slopes hard to the right. But, you can’t miss left because there are rocks from a hazard that hug the left edge of the green. The wind was blowing pretty good to the right. So I figured I would aim at the flag and if anything, the wind would carry it right where it would at least be safe. I flushed it, but I pushed it a smidge and the wind carried it to the right. So now I had a 35-footer well uphill. I 2-putted and made par (+2)
THOUGHTS: As far as contact and ball flight pattern, I only hit 1 weak shot on the entire back 9 (approach shot on #12). If I go back further, I only hit 2 weak shots on the last 13 holes (the 2nd shot on 9, which I hit well, but I sliced it and it was a driver off the deck).
The winter-spring time can be frustrating in Florida because you’ll find a lot of courses are struggling with their greens or the wind will be blowing hard. So it’s hard to get really good rounds of golf in with one of those things working against you. But overall, I’m very happy.
In the spirit of Dr. Bhrett McCabe’s work, here’s the 3-things I did well, the 3-things I did poorly and the 3-things I will do to get better at those things I did poorly.
DID WELL
1. Great day with the irons
2. Good day with the driver
3. Stuck in their mentally despite a slow start (+3 after 5 holes)
DID POORLY
1. Short Game around the green needs work
2. Putting needs improvement
3. Need to be more consistent in performance from hole-to-hole (this time a slow start hurt me)
WILL WORK ON THOSE THINGS POORLY
1. Need to get some practice on short game shots in this week.
2. Need to bend the lie angle in my SW by 1-2 degrees flat.
3. When I get ‘caught in a rip tide’, concentrate on what you’ve been working on and trying to rattle off consecutive good shots.
