I've been looking for a 983E or possibly a 983K on ebay. I want a stiff heavy shaft and probably 8.5 (maybe 9.5) head.
What are some good shafts with these? I lost an auction on one with a Stiff Grafalloy Blue (not Prolaunch) which is supposed to play like an X And just lost another auction on one with an X Fujikura VP-90.
What should I be paying for something like that?
Any other suggestions?

If I was you I'd just find one with the head you want... regardless of shaft (and actually, try to find one with a ladies flex or some other really s--ty shaft. They sell the cheapest!). Then buy the shaft separately.
You can pick up a Prolaunch Platinum real cheap (around $50) and I'd consider it a "poor man's Whiteboard." Very good/economical option.
If you look for a stiff or x-stiff shaft that's already installed you're competing with every other guy on the interweb. Take the road less traveled on this one. It works for me when I'm ho'ing.

So, (dumb question alert), driver heads aren't typically "matched" with the shafts like (some) irons?

Nope. I've found "Tour" heads with ladies flex shafts.... and vice versa. Really nice shafts with the crappiest of heads.
Those are the combos you want because no one wants to buy them. Everyone wants the Whiteboard shaft in the newest head (or some derivation there of).

Okay, this could turn in to a bit of a tirade, but there is an important lesson here. I won some vouchers for a golf shop a few years back. I'd used the legendary Titleist D for years and loved it. Loved it. None of the other bigger headed titanium drivers felt like it or could produce the kind of driver flight you need for windy days. Still don't. I'd only ever had second hand stuff before, but decided to splash out on my first ever new driver and the 983K was just out. I tried the E as well, preferred the K and ordered it. Didn't feel as solid as the D, but was more forgiving. Great. Remember all the stuff about trampoline high CoR faces? I remember people buying Callaway and Cobra drivers that they knew would be illegal in a couple of years. I generally use a driver for a long time, so didn't want to do the same. I had tried these too and didn't notice any difference anyway. Then the d-day for the trampoline faces arrives, the R&A issued the lists of the offending drivers and the 983K is on it! I clicked the link and it said that one version with different letters on was illegal. I checked my driver and there they were! I ordered a 983K. I thought there was only one type. It was never promoted as having a trampoline face and, to be honest, I expected more of Titleist. The magic letters? HCr. I'd never even noticed them before. Here's one and they kindly say it is non-conforming... cgi.ebay.co.uk/Japan-Titleist-983K-H-Cr-Non-Conforming-Driver-S-9-5-/280539868413?cmd=ViewItem&pt=Golf_Clubs&hash=item41517aacfdGreat driver, but order with care. Shaftwise, back with the D, the stock stiff shaft was really very very good. Much better than the stock Callaway and Taylor Made shafts. My K had the dark red Graffaloy and I really liked that too.

Yes the D was a legend and the Graffaloy shaft was good.
