Swansea CC, Blue Tees. My friend has a set of Titleist 704CB irons he's trying sell, so I tried them during this round.
#1 (par 4): Push-fade into right rough. PW came up a few yards short of the green. Nice chip with SW, and made 4-ft putt for par. (E)
#2 (par 5): High draw up the middle. 3-wood to about 70 yards. Punched a GW onto the green. Sloppy 3-putt from 20 feet. (+1)
#3 (par 4): High fade to the middle of the fairway. Half-skulled a 6i to the front edge. Poor chip, but made a 15-footer for par. (+1)
#4 (par 3): Duffed a hybrid about 70 yards up the fairway. Hit a solid 9i to the middle of the green. 2-putt for bogey. (+2)
#5 (par 4): Pull-draw 3-wood to the left rough, but safe. Thinned an 8i to the right bunker. Nice sand shot to a short-sided pin, and made the par putt. (+2)
#6 (par 3): There was some wind, so I tried hitting a punch 8i from 125yd. Pin was back-middle and I ended up in the back rough, with an awkward downhill chip. Made an OK shot, but this green is so fast downhill I rolled 20 feet past. 2-putt bogey. (+3)
#7 (par 4): Bad swing with the driver and I pushed it into a hazard on the right. Ball was playable though, and I punched a 5i to the front of the green. Chipped on and lipped out the par putt. (+4)
#8 (par 5): Heel cut drive, but in good shape on the right side of the fairway. Went for it with driver, but caught the right rough near a greenside bunker. Hit an awful pitch that didn't make the green. Putted onto the green, then two more putts for bogey. I'm disappointed anytime I bogey this easy par 5, but especially taking 4 strokes from about 30 yards out. (+5)
#9 (par 4): Bad drive into the right rough. Keep trying to set up for a draw and hitting push-fades. Maybe time to start setting up for a fade. Topped a 3-wood to about 60yd. Decent SW, but missed the par putt. (+6)
#10 (par 4): Best drive of the day, straight with 70yd left. GW to 30ft (Obviously need alot of work on the 50-100yd shots. On this day I was trying to hit punch shots with my GW, instead of flying the SW. Contact and direction was OK, but poor distance control). Good lag putt, but then pushed a short one for par. Pretty disappointing bogey after that drive. (+7)
#11 (par 3): Thin 6i to the front-right edge. Great lag putt and tap-in par. (+7)
#12 (par 4): Drive just caught the right rough. Best iron shot of the day, an 8i from 140yd to 8ft. Played defensive with the sliding downhill putt, and tapped in for par. (+7)
#13 (par 5): High fade in good shape, but pretty short for this long hole. Solid driver off fairway (I just started doing this recently, and I'm getting more consistent with it). Hybrid missed the green right. Bad chip and 2-putts for bogey. (+8)
#14 (par 4): Caught a 4i heavy but up the middle. High, leaky 8i into the right bunker. Hit it clean out of the bunker, but was hoping for the ball to run out more. Long 2-putt for bogey. (+9)
#15 (par 3): 3-wood WAY into the trees on the right. Was stymied, and had to punch out backwards. Good pitch, and missed a 4ft putt. (+11)
#16 (par 4): High 3-wood cut the corner on this dogleg right. 5i thin and right of the green. Nice pitch and missed another short putt. (+12)
#17 (par 5): Very low, but straight drive. Desperately looking for any par, I layed up to 110yd. PW to the middle of the green and 2-putt par. (+12)
#18 (par 4): Push-fade drive into right rough (getting very tired at this point). Pulled a 3-wood way left into some trees. Got lucky and had a look at the green; played a nice little low-runner with PW. 2-putts for bogey, and glad to be done with the round as my game was deteriorating. (+13)
Score: 85
Tough to say how I felt about the Titleist 704CB irons, as my swing felt pretty rough on this day. Hit alot of thin shots, but that's been a problem for me lately anyway. I did like the weight of these irons (heavier than I'm used to).
In terms of my play, I'm hoping to sharpen up my short game. I'd like to be able to save par more often on days like this when my ballstriking is off.
