1. Get an Exelys Breakmaster and understand how the green breaks.
2. Measure off green lengths and width.
3. Check out yardages.
4. Try to find a spot to aim on each tee until you can consistently hit shots pretty well of each tee. Hit balls off the tee, changing your spots to aim until you start to find something that 'fits your eye.'
5. Go to Google Earth and figure out what direction each hole goes towards. Then get the wind direction. Helps when the wind feels like it's swirling.
6. Find the spots that you don't want to miss.
7. Ask around for typical pin positions in tournaments.

Excellent suggestions for preparing before your tournaments! Having #1 has really helped my putting and course play because now I know how the greens slope and break. this allows you to play to the correct part of the green. #5 Is a brilliant suggestion in todays internet savy world

I have worked on a grounds crew for over 12 years and place tournament pins, heres a couple more tips
a) make sure you know type of grass on the course is, if poa get a early tee time cause it gets bumpy later on b) find out if the greens have strong grain or if there is a general direction it goes......I live next to Lake Superior....."it breaks to the lake!" c) learn more about golf course equipment like greens mowers (triplexes, handmowers) if they roll the greens, if they double cut).

Also Thanks Rich for the info in your blog on the Exelys Breakmaster, I'm going use that to set pins ( and backup if anyone questions the spot! ) Thanks, Jeff. I consider you an 'expert' in the field of greenkeeping and would love to hear more about your thoughts about golf course care and what we can do as golfer's to help with it and some of the problems you face as a superintendent. I would also suggest that you check out Mark Sweeney's AimPoint golf for more tips on pin placements and how the Tour places pins and what is considered a 'bad pin position.' I think Sweeney said something to the effect (don't quote me on this) that a pin position should be able to allow the golfer to leave the ball within a foot of the cup from 30 feet out and he shows some really poor pin positions where that doesn't happen. I think that would be right up your alley and you wouldn't have to hear the complaining from golfers about a bad pin position. But anyway, would love to hear your thoughts on your work as a super. 3JACK

Hey Rich- Im no super (wish) just a first class pin setter. Keeps me out of trouble Friday Saturday Sunday. Main 18 holes on the course has only 1 flat green, rest have some severe slope. When spring hits I am going to mark all the greens and publish what I have. Another interesting topic I would like to test when greens are aerified greens the slope is changed in any way. There is two types of greens on our course (remodeled 20 years ago), there is 10 sand greens and 17 pushed up mud greens. Also the course has some strong grain (break to the lake). Basically will try and verify if the chart is close or scale needs to be adjusted. Thank you for pointing me to Marks forum. Just logged in and there is lots to digest. Below is what I have downloaded from Exelys, kind of my planned base guide. www.exelys.com/myicons/photos/Green-Speed-and-Slope-Diagram.pdf

jiminsc - I highly recommend that you go to www.aimpointgolf.com and their forum for learning more about pin setting on the course. The inventor of aimpointgolf does a lot of work with the tours and also gets into bad pin positions where the golfers can't make a putt because the cup was cut in an unreasonable position. I wish my course had this as they are good for 2-3 bad cups a round. 3JACK

We played an upscale course near my home on a day they had a sign in front of the first tee that stated "Superintendent's Revenge." Having never seen it before, none of us payed much attention. At the end of the round it felt like we had gone 18 rounds with Ingemar Johansen. Every pin placement was a killer. I can't wait until they do it again.
