Played Windermere today. Weather was really nice, but it got really breezy by #8 today. Played in 4:15 as a 4-some. Greens still a bit bumpy. Used the PC's (left my 7-iron at Cateechee, so now I have to drive up there tomorrow) and the Bettinardi.
#1 - They have the tees way up and I hit a nice driver down the middle. Pulled a 9-iron a bit which was a problem since there's a gigantic swale where I would be putting the ball. Knocked the first putt 12 feet bye, which is about the best anybody can do from there. And hit a good second putt, but just short. (+1)
#2 - Caught a 5-iron a little off the toe and chunky to the left side of the green. Chipped a LW to a foot and kicked in for par (+1)
#3 - Hit a driver well, but just a smidge off the toe so the ball started a little left and draw close to the left hazard. I was about a foot away from the hazard. The guys I was playing with got a stroke on that hole, so decided to go for it with a tough lie. Normally I would play it safe. Anyway, hit the 2nd shot with a hybrid into the hazard. Next shot onto the green and 2-putted for bogey (+2)
#4 - Tees wayyy up front today. Hit a driver and almost drove the green. They had a match play tourney today so the pins were in tournament positions. This green has a big swale on the right side of the green that makes a ( type shape and they put the pin behind the ( part of the green. I pushed my chip a tad and went down into the swale. 2-putted for par (+2)
#5 - 7-iron to 20 feet. Not enough on the birdie putt and tapped in for par (+2)
#6 - Pretty good hybrid off the tee. Hit a 7-iron (I brought my Bounce Sole 1+ 7-iron in place of my PC 7-iron) and hit a nice shot from a tough downhill lie to 20 feet. Missed the putt and tapped in for par (+2)
#7 - Choked up on a 6-iron all the way and hit a shot to 30 feet. My buddies asked why I hit that club and choked up all the way and my response is that I really don't like swinging all out on a club and trying to let the wind (we had a tail wind) carry the shot. I'd rather take less club, choke up and drive the ball because sometimes the ball gets knocked down quickly with a tail wind. Anyway, I 2-putted and came away with a par (+2)
#8 - I think I get too high of a spin rate with this driver. I think this because I hit this shot a bit off the toe but with an upward strike. This caused a high shot that had a bit of draw spin on it. I also proceeded to outdrive my friends by about 70 yards instead of 20 yards per norm. Despite them hitting their shots flush and mine a bit off the toe. Anyway, I had a downhill, very tight lie with a SW that had to get over the bunker. I did, but the ball spun back and didn't get over this hump. I then 2-putted from 20 feet (+2)
#9 - Big driver down the middle. I then had a hybrid into the green. I should've played the ball up more in my stance with the uphill lie but I didn't. that shifted the path to the right and I hooked one into the deep rough left of the green. Put my next shot on and almost made the 20 foot birdie putt (+2)
#10 - Big driver down the middle. Haven't worked on my flops lately and my flop LW went too far and I 2-putted from 25 feet. (+2)
#11 - Tried to fade a 4-iron into a right to left wind, but it stayed straight and the wind carried it past the green. Didn't get enough on the flop LW and then I 2-putted from 30 feet (there's a big swale where this pin is located) (+3)
#12 - Good driver down the middle. Hit a 9-iron a little heavy and left myself with a 30 foot putt. Thought I killed my first putt, but the greens are about an 8 on the stimp right now compared to playing Cateechee yesterday which was about a 12 on the stimp. But, I made a nice 4-footer to save par (+3)
#13 - Another good driver down the middle, but I was left with a difficult lie in the fairway. I hit a 9-iron to about 30 feet and 2-putted from there (+3)
#14 - Perfect driver down the middle. Had a 3-iron with a mega-steep downhill lie. Hit the 3-iron well, but it only got about 4 feet off the ground. This LW was flopped well, landing about 3 feet short of the cup, but it rolled about 12 feet past. I lipped out the birdie. (+3)
#15 - Another perfect driver on a hole that was playing tough today. I had a 9-iron in and I don't think many golfers had a 9-iron in from those tees today. I stuck the 9-iron to 8-feet and finally made a birdie (+2)
#16 - Teed this ball down and played it slightly back in my stance so I could control the flight and give myself a good lie in the fairway. I did just that. It's still a ball above your feet lie, but on that hole that's about the best you can do. and I hit a 6-iron fat and short of the green. Thought I made a good pitch with a PW, but it was about 10 feet short. Hit a good putt, but not enough and made a bogey (+3)
#17 - Hit an 8-iron that went right at the flag beautifully to about 7 feet. Then I made the birdie putt (+2)
#18 - Good driver into the wind. Had 220 into the wind and I took a 3-hybrid out. Flushed it just a smidge left of the flag stick. Landed about 2 feet short of the green and then rolled back into the water. I dropped at the drop area and then hit a chip about a foot to the hole and saved par (+2)
I was a bit groggy since this is the 4th day of golf out of the last 5 days and I did a bit of traveling yesterday and with the pollen, I've probably averaged about 4 hours of sleep a night for the past 2 weeks. Started out a bit slow, but got it going, My driver was A+ today. Struggled a bit with the short irons. The putting is still abysmal by my standards, but I haven't worked on it much. I need to start thinking about putting lessons and getting an Edel putter and treating the putting like I treat my ballstriking.
Hopefully as I progress with ABS, I will not need to practice the swing as much and just do about a 1/2 hour or module practice and range time and then spend the rest on short game and exercise.
