In the past I had always used slope to determine how difficult the course was going to be for me to play but as I have gotten better I have noticed Rating has been a better indicator.
Slope = difficulty for the bogey + golfer Rating = difficulty for the scratch player
For example today I played a course that had the following for a par 71
middle tees- 6600, 125 slope 71.2 rating back tees - 7100, 129 72.9
When I looked at the card before the round and said 129 is not too bad but after (albeit struggled) said man that course is way tougher than 129. So comparing the ratings 72.9 to other courses I play and thats one of the harder ones. I am a little surprised the slope did not go up with the rating(71.2 to 72.9 is a big jump).

I agree Greg. I think Eagle Watch in Georgia is like 73 index and a 142 slope. I just got done playing Eastwood in Florida and it's a 133 slope...but with a 75.3 index. NOT EASY by any means. Lots of longer irons into greens and 2 holes that are extremely hard. Has a 630 yard par-5 that is pretty much a long ass par-5 for anybody since it has a very sharp dog leg.
