Fioranello golf course: www.fioranellogolf.it/percorso.php
I had just had my irons flatted to 5 degrees flat of standard, and increased swingweight from D1 to D6. With only some short game and putting practice, went straight to first tee. Handicap is 16.8.
#1 308m Par4: Short par 4 but dogleg right that usually requires a second shot over some trees unless you hit 250m drive. I hit driver without any warm up and hooked it into the short rough left and short. Hit a 7 iron to the left of the trees in good position in front of the green. Over hit sand wedge to back of green just off. 3 putted for a double bogey when missing a short putt for bogey. +2
#2 106m Par3: Short hole slightly up hill protected by bunkers all round. Hit a gentle 8 iron to the right in slight rough. Had a horrible lie and overshot the green with my chip shot. Down in 2 for a bogey. +3
#3 335m Par4: Dog leg left over a ravine/water hazard – needs a good drive to be in position to reach the green. Hit a perfect drive down the right side leaving about 110m to the green. Hit an 8 iron a bit thin which just held the green to the right. Two putted for par. +3
#4 298m Par4: Very short par 4. Hit decent drive to the left of the fairway. Hit a gentle 9 iron over the green slightly right. Got down in 2 for par. +3
#5 173m Par3: Hit a 4 iron fat and short right of green. Chipped on and two putted for bogey. +4
#6 353m Par4: Hardest hole on course which is up-hill and green is on top of a big mound. Hit drive on the fairway. Had a downhill lie for my shot to the green and came up off the shot, hitting it short and right of the mountain green. Chipped up and two putted for bogey. +5
#7 380m Par4: Downhill all the way, hit my drive into the rough on the right side. Hit an 8 iron just short of green. Shanked my chip shot! I do at least one of these per round. From right side of green chipped and 2 putted for double bogey. +7
#8 488m Par5: Uphill all the way, usually a bad hole for me. Hit driver to right side of fairway – big relief as this is where it usually goes wrong. Hit a 5 iron up the hill leaving me an 8 iron which I hit onto the green. Two putt for par, first ever on this hole for me. +7
#9 180m Par3: Hit a 3 iron fat, short and right of green. Poor chip shot a bit right. Putted off edge of green still poor, and 2 putted from there. Double bogey. +9
#10 483m Par5: Hit a nice drive to the left of the fairway. Second shot has water to the left in play and I chose a 3 wood hoping to clear it – pulled it straight into the middle of the water. Dropped and hit 8 iron onto green. Two putted for bogey. +10
#11 123m Par3: Nice little par 3 with hole on top tier. I tried to hit a gentle 7 iron but hit it fat into bunker short left. Hit it out and 2 putted for bogey. +11
#12 331m Par4: Almost 90 degree dogleg right. Hit driver to far end of dogleg, just on fairway. Hit iron off back left of green. Chipped and two putted for bogey. +12
#13 278m Par4: Very short but can’t see the green due to big dogleg right. Hit a 3 iron hoping to reach the corner, but with wind from left to right, plus some fade/slice, it landed in the rough right side. Hit pitching wedge from the rough onto the green, and two putted for par. +12
#14 466m Par5: Weird shape to this hole, with 90 degree dogleg for the last 100m. Hit driver right of fairway, hitting tree. From the rough struggled to get a 5 iron through the ball, remaining in the rough with about 130m to hole. Hit 6 iron from the rough to front of green, cutting the dog-leg. Poor chip shot and then found a way to 3 putt from just off the green for double bogey. +14
#15 403m Par4: Hit a decent drive to centre of fairway. From downhill lies I seem to struggle at the moment, and hit my 3 iron thin with slice spin, luckily hitting a tree which prevented it from going into the ravine/hazard to the right. Hit a pitching wedge but flipped it, landing just short of green. Got down in two thanks to a nice chip for bogey. +15
#16 324m Par4: Up hill all the way and again a green on top of a mound. Pulled a horrible drive left into thick rough and ball was lost. Replay drive went down the middle. Hit a 6 iron up to the plateau just off back edge. Two putted for double bogey. +17
#17 148m Par3: Downhill, with wind blowing in different directions, and green protected by trees on right side. Hit 7 iron to right side, which caught the top of the tree but landed just off the green to the right. 2 putted for par. +17
#18 320m Par4: Short hole but tight fairway with trees either side and OOB on left. Hit a 3 wood on fairway. Hit a slightly thin 7 iron onto green for a birdie opportunitely. Couldn’t believe it, 3 putted for bogey! +18
Greens in regulation: 4, although quite a few just off
Fairways hit: 8/13
Driving was OK, only lost one ball and bad drives were generally still in play.
Iron play was poor for long irons, was OK for short irons.
Putting still a bit poor but better than of late
Chipping mostly OK, except for a shank and one other poor effort.
Usually I have a couple of disaster holes, e.g. quadruple bogey. Today was not bad - it's progress as last time I was out on this course I scored 98, but this time 88. I feel I'm missing the fact I can't work on modules 1 to 4 of ABS recently due to a rib injury incurred playing soccer, but module 6 is helping a lot with my transition. I can only play thanks to taking Anti-inflammatory medicine - I need to get out there more often. Once very 2 weeks is not enough for me. With my current game I feel I should be able to avoid double bogeys, and get round hitting either bogey or par, with the odd birdie. I spend more time probably on golf forums than I do playing and practicing... wish I could change that.
