Today I took a 25 minute drive to play the other course I'm a member at, North Shore. It's about 7,000 yards from the tips with a 73.5 index and 136 slope. I actually think it's much more difficult than Eastwood, but I can pretty much reach every green in regulation at North Shore, some of Eastwood's can be difficult depending on the wind direction. Started out as a beautiful day, but the temp kept increasing. I really liked the course though. They did do a 'mini-punch' of the greens, but they were still okay. I used the Bounce Sole 1+ irons today.
#1 (301 yds) - Very short par-4. Hit a good driver that almost drove the green, I just missed it right. Good pitch with a SW to 3-feet and made the birdie (-1)
#2 - (382 yds) - A bit of a tight hole, hit a decent driver down the right side of the rough. Pushed a 9-iron off the toe, but had 20 feet to the cup. Good putt, but just missed (-1)
#3 - (454 yards) - A tough par -4 into the wind with water hugging the right side. I played the hole safe down the left side. Hit a good 5-iron to 20 feet feet. Another good putt, but just missed (-1)
#4 - (424 yards) - Into the wind hit a driver well to left side of the fairway. Hit a 6-iron okay, but a bit off the toe and found the green. I then didn't play nearly enough break, but made the 6-foot comebacker (-1)
#5 - (367 yards) - Toe drawed a driver into the fairway bunker. Hit a 9-iron onto the green to 20 feet and 2-putted for par (-1)
#6 - (235 yards) - This was into the wind. I convinced myself to tee the ball very low and hit a driver that I choked up 1/2 way up. I then proceeded to hit a shot to 3-feet. Sometimes you just have to trust you own nutty moves. Made the birdie which would easily be 1 stroke up on a tourney field (-2)
#7 - (559 yards) Hit a so-so driver down the middle. I didn't really know how to play this hole, so I played safe with a 3-hybrid safely. Then I hit a 7-iron that went onto the green, but rolled down a large false front. Chipped a bit hard and burned the edge on the par save (-1)
#8 (138 yards) - Toed a 8-iron into the wind and almost went into the water. Chipped to a few inches and kicked in for par (-1)
#9 (611 yards) - Pretty good driver down the left side. Hit a low screaming 3-wood. Then put a 7-iron to 30-feet and 2-putted for par (-1)
#10 - (365 yard) - right into the wind. Hit an okay driver down the right side. Toe pushed a 7-iron and made a pretty good pitch, but lipped out a 6-foot putt (E)
#11 - (569 yards) - Another so so driver that found the fairway. Hit another low screaming 3-wood and then hit a 9-iron to 40 feet. But, a good birdie run and tapped in for par (E)
#12 - (417 yards) - Good driver down the left side. Hit a 5-iron right at the flag, but it went over the green. Hit a pretty good chip, but it made a bad kick. But I then drilled the putt (E)
#13 - (400 yards) - Good driver down the left side. Another toe push with a 8-iron. I made a so-so pitch and missed the par-save (+1)
#14 - (170 yards) - Hit a 5-iron flush, right at the flag. But too much club and that put me to 40 feet. Poor first putt but made the 7-footer for par (+1)
#15 - (525 yards) - Another so-so driver into the wind. Nice hybrid shot for a layup. Hit a PW to 10 feet and made the birdie putt (E)
#16 - (320 yards) - Almost drove the green here and made a nice pitch to 7 feet and made the birdie (-1)
#17 - (201 yards) - tail-wind and I toed a 5-iron just left of the green. Nice pitch to 3-feet and made the par-save (-1)
#18 - (461 yards) - Big drive, but in the left rough. Flushed a 6-iron to 30 feet and 2 putted from 30 feet for par (-1)
While I'm obviously happy with the score, I'm more happy that I shot the score and didn't hit the irons that well. I actually hit the long irons very well and a solid day with the driver, but couldn't hit the short irons worth a damn.
It does go to show that if you can have a pretty good day driving and putting, you will likely score well.
I'm trying to get back to more of my old putting stroke with the ball position more forward and letting gravity do the work on the thru stroke and really focus on the aiming line right in front of my ball.
