I LOVE the PW from my set of '61 Wilson Dyna-Powers. The bottom of the face sits square and the leading edge is in a straight line as opposed to having a rounded heal and toe like the modern wedges. It just makes alignment easier for me. It just goes where I point it.
I currently play Snake Eyes Box Groove 58* and 53* wedges, but after getting used to the square leading edge of the Wilson's I'm starting to hate the modern wedges.
The straight leading edge really digs in the sand though... so here's my thinking.
I'd like to get a wedge that I will play exclusively out of bunkers (I believe Lag has this set up, too. That's where I got the idea). The old R20 and R90 wedges are supposed to be fantastic out of the sand as they have very rounded leading edges, are heavy, and by all accounts just a fantastic sand wedge.
I'd probably have to get two SW's and bend one from 56* to 58*... then bend the other one form 56* to 54*... I'd then have 50*, 54*, and 58* straight leading edge wedges, and a wedge for bunkers.
Just thinking out loud. I appreciate any feedback.

interesting...I for one LOVE the snake eyes ( 685BX) stuff...I have many older wedges and change off regularly, but if money or a score was important that day, the snake eyes go into the bag! I say this having a decent short game (you better when you swing like I do LOL), but I just like the feel...I don't compress the ball enough to generate much spin...
I do use a Hogan sure-out in the sand sometimes---that club will NOT dig in the sand! I will post a pic if you havent see one...
thanks for thinking out loud---I love wedges!

I own a several wedges to deal with different conditions. From Titleist Vokeys to Cleveland's 590, tour action 900 as well as Ping's S/W and their new lobwedge with 12* bounce. During summer, our courses here in Fla get very fluffy where more bounce the better. Only after rain sessions, it compacts down where you need low bounce makes it easier. Btw, Cloran, keep that Hogan Sureout, its classic and works awesome and good for killing snakes too. lol

I have some vintage wedges, MacGregor, Wilson and others. They are fun to use from time to time just for kicks. They work very well still, but my Gamers are Eidolons. If you have not tried them, they are very easy to use with the unique sole design. They are very easy to open and close for special shots.

I'm a noob at vintage, as I only own 1 set (Hogan Percussions), but my sand iron is my favorite club; it's a Ben Hogan IPT Sand Iron. It's a heavy head, it's got a lot of bounce, the leading edge is a straight line, and it's super sharp. The weight is great for bunkers, the sharp leading edge gives a lot of bite, and as long as you're descending on it and trying to chop the golf ball, you can play it on the fairways and rough too, even with the big bounce. Definitely my favorite club, which was lucky, since I originally bought it just to have a Hogan sand wedge from that era. Got it from e-bay with a junior length shaft which I changed.

My latest favorite wedge...It came in a grab bag of misc stuff from Ebay a couple months ago...I just started using in recently. It's got plenty of loft (close to 58) and really easy to get the ball up...flop shots are really nice too as long as I don't get "armsy"...plus it says "Hogan" on it!! Attachments:

One thing I dont think people appreciate about wedges is how often they should be replaced if you play and practice a lot. A year ago I bought two Mizuno wedges and they were ball eaters and could check almost any pitch but now things are releasing way more. I have probably played 50 rounds and hit 400-600 balls with with each wedge, plus practice around the short game area.

Is the wear visible at all? yes, the groves in the sweet spot are worn in comparison to the rest of the groves, there is a slightly brownish tint on the sweet spot that you seen in forged chrome clubs.. Maybe a 1/16 of an inch if I was guessing.

I once bought an SMT wedge with square grooves and a spin milled face. Wow, it was leaving claw marks on the golf ball, and the bite was ridiculous without even trying. Too bad it doesn't stay like that for long, but while it lasts, it's a lot of fun.

My friend used to have a wedge called the JAWS wedge. This was back in the 90's. He got it down in Florida and man, that thing could spin off the world and would just chew golf balls up like it was nothing.
