5:36am tee time. I wanted to get 9 in and be home before the kids got up. I walked on so I wasn't sure when I would be teeing off. I was able to get right on, but had no time to warm up... I need that, but oh well.
1. Dogleg Left Par 4. The fairway is a plateau so it takes driver out of your hands. 3 iron off the tee, 9 iron to the green, 2 putts... par (E)
2. Straight away par 4. Big drive pulled into the left rough. Had 100 yards to the center, over a bunker. I need to get a range finder because I actually only had about 85 to the pin. 53* wedge went over the back. Chipped to 15 feet. Made the putt for par. (E)
3. Downhill par 3. It was a perfect 8 iron, but I don't have an 8 iron (snapped, waiting for a new set of '69 dynapowers to come in). Thinned a 9 iron pin high. Two putts from 40 ft... par (E)
4. Slight dogleg right par 4. Blind tee shot. Topped my drive 200 yards. Good 3 wood from 240 ended up in the right rough 10 yards short of the green. I was short sided and needed to land my chip in the rough to get it close. I hit the spot I wanted perfectly. The ball bounced onto the green, and the for some reason took a 90* turn to the right... must have been a pebble on the green or something. Two putts from 20 feet... bogey (+1)
5. Dogleg Left par 4. Driver brought the bunkers into play so I tried the 3 wood. Topped it and it trickled off the front of the ladies tees 50 yards away. The ball was on the 45* down slope at the front of the tee, in 6" rough. I had one foot on the tee box, one on the ground, and no chance to advance the ball, lol... I hacked at it with a 7i and it went about 20 yards just short of the fairway. THICK rough... I hit a majestic 3 iron that started to draw around the dogleg... then I heard the all too familiar sound that is made when a ball strikes a branch. I was left with 50 yards. Flubbed my pitch. Chipped on. Two putt... tripple bogey. (+4)
6. Straight par 4. Blind tee again. Good drive. I was left with about 120 to the center I guessed. Again, I NEED A RANGE FINDER! This course has 100, 150, and 200 yard stakes, but no markers on the sprinkler heads. I thought the pin was in the center (ended up being more in the front). My PW i flew to the back of the green, one hop and stopped on the fringe. I was in between a PW and 9i for the rule of 12... it was downhill so I went with the PW. I carried the ball a step too far, but it tracked into the cup for birdie, nice. Not too shabby from 66 feet. (+3)
[3 Over through 6. At this point I started thinking about breaking 40 for the first time. I had two par 5s and a par 3 to finish up... neither of the par 5's are reachable in 2, but I should be able to par them easily.... ]
7. Dogleg left par 5. Tee shot is blind and level, then the hole doglegs severely downhill to the left. The tee lines you up at the fairway bunkers on the left and you can't see the fairway at all... But I know this, so I aimed at the right side of the bunker playing for my fade. I ended up hitting a bomb, but dead straight. Carried the bunker, but was 6" into the rough, that 6" probably cost me 20 yards of roll. I made a stupid decision and tried to smash a 3i as far as I could. Pushed it into the trees on the right. Had to chip out sideways. Pitched over the green, chipped on, two putted... double bogey. (+5)
8. 180 yard severely uphill par 3. A real crappy hole. You can't see any of the green, and it has a false front. REALLY crappy hole. I skanked a 5 iron right. Then I s-s-s-s-s-s-s-hanked my wedge into the hazard, woods, death valey on the right. Dropped one w/ a stroke, chipped over the green (again it was blind), chipped back on, two putts... Quadruple Bogey!!!!!! (+9)
[Two holes ago I was amped and trying to break 40 for the fist time... now I'm trying to break 50!]
9. Dogleg right par five. I was distraught at this point. Push faded my driver into the trees on the right. Punched out with a 7i. Had about 240 to the green. Dead pulled a 3 wood into the trees left of the green. I had to punch under very low hanging limbs and over a bunker. Punched another 7i over the green. Chipped on, two putts for double bogey... (+11)
Ended with a 47. I need a range finder. I need more M2 (squat) on ALL my shots. I need to stop thinking about the score.
Something else I realized early on is that when I play alone I play way too fast. I was out of my routine from the start.
