Today I played Eastwood. I made some changes to my swing since I had been struggling a bit this past week and I made my backswing more upright (it's still flat) to help with my pivot and get a little more leverage into the downswing. I used the Apex PC's today and probably will use them for awhile until I get things to where I want them.
I started on #10 today.
#10 - hit a push fade into the right side of the fairway. That left me with a 3-wood and then a 3-iron that just missed the green. I got up and down though (E)
#11 - Good driver that hooked quite a bit into the wind. Had to hit a 3-wood that was a big push hook but found the green. 2-putted from 30 feet (E)
#12 - hit a 3-hybrid a little high on the face, but the tailwind carried it onto the green and I 2-putted from 40 feet. (E)
#13 - Push faded a driver down the right side. Completely guessed at the second shot since I'm right up against marsh and small trees and guessed right. 2-putted from 30 feet.
#14 - Blocked my first 4-iron into the water. Hit from the drop area and 2-putted for double (+2)
#15 - Pushed my driver a tad, but had a 7-iron into the green and hit that to 20 feet. 2-putted from there (+2)
#16 - Good driver down the middle. Pushed a 3-wood a bit, but was okay. Hit a PW into the wind from 100 yards to the back of the green and 2-putted for par (+2)
#17 - Push faded my driver a tad and found the fairway bunker. Hit a 4-iron out of the bunker a little towards the toe, but it wound up 8 feet to the hole, so really a great shot. I drilled the birdie (+1)
#18 - Good driver down the middle Then I hit a 7-iron to about a foot and kicked in for birdie...two in a row (E)
#1 - Pulled the 3-wood out because the wind was tailing me and I wasn't confident yet with my driver. Toe drawed the 3-wood which put me in the left rough. Hit a 9-iron to 10 feet and made the birdie...3 in a row (-1)
#2 - Good drive that just drew a little too much. Beautiful hybrid around the trees to about 50 yards. Pretty good SW to about 12 feet, but I moved my head and missed the putt pretty poorly. Could've been 4 in a row (-1)
#3 - Hit a 6-iron well, but not enough club. I then got up and down nicely from there with a SW (-1)
#4 - I've never hit this green in regulation from the back tees and today it was into the wind. Hit a solid driver down the middle. I then hit a 3-hybrid pretty well, but a bit low and it rolled thru the green. Mediocre pitch followed by a mediocre putt and I make bogey (E)
#5 - Pull drawed a driver, but was wayyy down there and only had a 7-iron into a hole where I usually have about a 3-iron into the green. Hit the iron to the fringe and 2-putted after another mediocre first putt (E)
#6 - Over-drawed a driver off the tee leaving me with a tough lie. Hit a good 3-hybrid, but with the wind in my face, I still had about 160 to the green. Hit a 7-iron flush, but pushed it. Nice flop shot to about 5-feet and made the par save (E)
#7 - Good driver down the middle into the wind. Hit a 4-iron into the wind that rifled right at the flag, but went 20 feet past, 2-putted for par (E)
#8 - Flushed another 4-iron to about 12 feet. Putt was S-L-O-W into the grain (E)
#9 - Hooked the crap out of a driver, but still had a good lie and angle into the green. Then I hooked the crap out of a 7-iron into the bunker. Pretty good bunker shot to 8-feet, but missed the putt for par (+1)
One of the things I'm glad that I did was take notes last year as I got back into the game. Last year about this time I started to struggle after a really great month of striking the ball. I wrote about it in my notes and harkened back to my previous years golfing and remembered that I pretty much always struggle from about mid-May to mid-June.
My theory is that I probably make swing changes and adjustments in the winter time. I think I have a habit of picking up instruction very quickly, but over time I start to overdo what the instruction says. In this instance, we flattened out my downswing and more or less did it by flattening out the backswing. The backswing probably was looking pretty good a month or two ago, but eventually over time it just gradually got way too flat.
In the past I didn't use video that much. Last year I did, but I got too comfortable and confident with the way I was hitting the ball and I was ignoring flaws creeping into my swing. I think the same happened this year as well.
So I guess my threshold for learning new instruction and overdoing it is about 3 months. I plan on attacking this issue by video taping myself every day and then as time goes along, probably about 3-4 times a week, just keeping things in check and not letting them get out of hand.
Still, 73 (+1) isn't a bad score for a struggling round. Lots of great shots, lots of poor ones. I went on the range and found my swing pretty much looks pretty good, but I was swinging more out to the right today than I was yesterday, which probably explains the inconsistency and the hooks.
