Chapel Hills is a Rocky Rocquemore designed club that plays 6,600 yards from the back tees with a 130 slope. Many consider Chapel Hills to have the best greens of all of Canongate, but with the recent additions of Cateechee and The Frog, it’s probably slipped into 3rd.
The course is a pretty tradition parkland course for the most part, but some holes were developed in places not greatly suited for golf and needed time and money to get spruced up, but generally it’s a pretty nice course. It’s also very hilly and features a double green on #9 and #18. Rocquemore did a great job of designing the course so they can tee off #1 or #10 and the 9th and 18th holes are attractive holes to finish on with the greens sitting below the clubhouse and with a large pond in front. However, he didn’t do a smart job with the range as golfers heading to the range have to drive by the #1 tee which can distract golfers that are teeing off. And they also switch sides they use the range frequently, often having one day where they use the north side of the range and then the following day use the south side of the range. If you’re using the south side, now you have to drive all the way down the first hole which can just be more distracting and dangerous.
Overall the course is pretty easy as the only tough holes are #1, #6, #14 and #16, but there’s plenty of birdie opportunities out there.
The best holes are #4, #11 and #14. #15 is a bad hole and they screwed up #9 with the terrain of the green. It’s a very shallow green that has a gigantic tier and if the pin is in the back tier, it gets ridiculous trying to make a par because you’ll either wind up over the green or on the bottom tier.
#14 is a real thing of beauty. It’s about 580 yards going a bit downhill with water than can come into play on the 2nd and 3rd shot. The drive usually winds up with a downhill lie on the 2nd shot and it’s really not reachable in two, but it’s a beautiful golf hole. #15 is just a short par-4 where the ball is likely to plug off the tee shot. The hole really does nothing for me.
Overall a course that can help with your confidence that is usually in pretty good shape and has good greens. A little more money kicked into the place could help work out the kinks, especially providing an alternate route to the range and cleaning up some of the holes like #2 thru #4 and #8.
