Today I decided to play Eastwood again and this time I played with my modern, Cleveland Hi-Bore XLS driver (and my 3-wood as well). Sprinkled a bit off and on early in the round. Winds were breezy at about 20 mph or so. Course a bit wet, but in good shape.
I also think I saw America's Team...err, I mean Dallas Cowboys QB Tony Romo on the putting green. Well, it sure looked like him and he seemed to avoid me. But that doesn't mean it was Tony Romo
#1 - Good 3-wood off the tee down the middle. Hit a 9-iron in one of those, swing easy hit flush and hard shots to the middle of the green, but the pin was well up front. 2-putted for par (E)
#2 - Good driver off the tee, but it drawed on me a bit too much and found the fairway, but didn't have a shot at the green. Hit a 5-iron a little chunk and then hit a 9-iron to about 20 feet and had a poor first putt, but made the 4-footer for par (E)
#3 - A little off the toe with a 5-iron, but I found the green. Had about 30-35 feet for birdie and lipped out. (E)
#4 - Didn't crush this one, but found the fairway and would've been a great drive if the ground wasn't wet. Instead I had 200 into the wind and had to fade it a tad. Hit a 3-hybrid well, but it pushed a little more than I wanted and nicked a tree. It went short of the bunker. Had it hit the tree it goes in the bunker. Despite not being in the sand, I had a tough lie. I hit a pretty decent LW pitch, but it hit the collar and roughly scooted forward about 45 feet. 2-putted for bogey (+1)
#5 - Solid driver down the middle followed by a good 3-hybrid into the wind and a good run at birdie, but made par instead (+1)
#6 - One of my best drives I've had on this hole that found the middle of the fairway. Caught a 4-iron layup a tad thin, but still went well. Then I hit a 8-iron to about 35 feet and 2-putted from there. (+1)
#7 - Another solid driver down the right side of the fairway. Flushed a 5-iron, but the wind caught it and it went short. I get the feeling there is no way that the 150 yard marker on this hole is legit. I think it's probably closer to 160 yards...if not longer. Anyway, hit a nice lob with the LW to 3-feet and made the par (+1)
#8 - Chunked a 5-iron into the pond, really a piss poor shot. Then hit a pretty good pitch from the drop to about 8 feet, but couldn't make the bogey save (+3)
#9 - Good driver into the wind to 200 yards. Then a good 3-hybrid to about 40 feet and 2-putted there (+3)
#10 - Good driver down the middle. 2nd shot is into the wind and hit a 3-wood good down the right side. Then I hit a 3-iron that I toed a tad and missed the green lightly left. Tough chip as I used the Rule of 12 and went short with the SW. I dropped another ball to see if the PW would've been the play, but that went well bye the hole. Best play probably would be a 'safe zone' more towards the cup and hit the SW. Anyway, I mised the par ave (+4)
#11 - Good driver down the middle. Didn't have good contact with the 3-iron, but found the green. Then I knocked my first putt well bye the cup, but made the 7-footer coming back (+4)
#12 - Didn't make good contact with the 3-hybrid and hit a push fade. Nice pitch shot with a SW to about 7-feet and drained the par save (+4)
#13 - Good driver down the right side. I figure I should just aim down the right side most of the time on this hole because the approach shot is a complete guess anyway, and I'd rather guess with a 8-iron or a 9-iron than a 6-iron or 7-iron. Anyway, I guessed right this time with an 8-iron that I flushed. Good 2-putt from 30 feet. (+4)
#14 - Flushed a 3-iron into the teeth of the wind to the back of the green to 30 feet. 2-putted from there (+4)
#15 - Another good driver that found the fairway. Flushed a 9-iron to 15 feet, but lipped out for birdie (+4)
#16 - Good driver down the right side of the fairway. Pushed a 3-wood a bit. Then I knocked a PW to a foot and kicked in for birdie (+3)
#17 - Another nice driver down the right side of the fairway. Flushed a 7-iron right over the cup, but wound up 23 feet away on a big slope. Lipped out, but left myself a 7-footer coming back, but drained the par putt (+3)
#18 - Big driver down the middle. In between clubs I took a 8-iron and caught a little fat and off the toe, but found the green. Good putt for birdie, but tapped in for par (+3)
'There are no thornbushes in the middle of the fairway' - Moe Norman.
Very true, as I didn't miss a fairway today. I am normally very accurate with my driver, but even this is rare for me. Of course, I wasn't playing Oakmont, but it was breezy out there. I think my record for fairways hit is something like 27 in a row from last year, today I got 14.
So, I drove the ball great today. I thought I putted well today, too. No 3-putts, but since my approaches were not close I couldn't make many putts. The iron play was so-so. Quite a few great shots, but quite a few mediocre ones and the tee shot on #8 cost me two strokes.
After the round I started working on M3 and it's a workout. Takes me about 1 hour to do the M3 exercise. If I try to do it quicker, I think my arms would fall off.
So far I think ABS has really fit me well. Elbow plane, pitch elbow, M2's footwork...all really good for me. Now with M3, I think that it may be great for me as well.
This past week I was looking at my swing and here are my thoughts. I think I control the clubface very well. It's probably the reason why I can hit as many greens and fairways as I do, even though I'm not long off the tee. I think my clubface control is probably top level, but not world class. I think I have a consistent path, but my path is a bit too far out to the right. I think I'm mediocre to decent...depending on the day when it comes to controlling the low point. I think that this is my biggest issue when it comes to my golf swing and ballstriking. I think today I was pretty much so-so with the low point. Hopefully M3 will help with that as my path should get closer to zero.
I plan on working on M3 almost every day and then in my swing while I'm working in M3, I'll just work on getting to what Lag calls 'PV5', which is what Hogan is on the pic on the right side:
Once I get that down, I'll then start allow myself to wrap the club around.
