Today I played one of the courses I'm a member at, North Shore GC. Eastwood punched their greens on Monday and I was happy with my ballstriking and I just got my '67 Hogan PC5 (Percussion) irons bent flat and just flushing them on the range and I didn't want to waste a good round of ballstriking on punched greens. I only have 4-9 of the PC5, so my bag today looked like this:
3-iron - Hogan Apex PC
4-iron - Hogan Apex PC
4-9 - Hogan PC5
SW - Mizuno
LW - Nickent
Flew around the front side pretty well, but we got held up on #11. Probably finished in 4:20. Sweltering hot on the back side. Greens in solid shape, course in solid shape. Little wind today.
#1 - Hit an okay driver that found itself on the cart path and dropped in the fairway. Hit a pitch the way I wanted to, but it surprisingly checked up. Mis-read the putt, but had perfect speed and saved the par with a made 3-footer (E)
#2 - Big driver down the middle. Hit a 9-iron to about 2 feet and made the birdie (-1)
#3 - Another big driver down the middle. My work on M3 is paying off as about 3 weeks ago I was about 50 yards behind where I was. Part of this had to do with my super flat backswing back then as well. I hit a decent 5-iron and pushed it a bit. Paced it off to 48 feet. Drained the putt. I didn't think it would get there, but it did...and then some. (-2)
#4 - Good driver down the middle. Face pulled a 7-iron a bit and the ball ran off to about a 50 foot birdie putt. I was in between clubs and should've just taken what I thought I needed and be aggressive. Almost made this 50 foot birdie as well and tapped in for par (-2)
#5 - I need to stop hitting driver on this hole as I don't feel comfortable with it. I hit one so bad that I still wound up in the fairway, but I won't count this as a fairway. I then flushed a 7-iron to 13 feet. Not nearly enough break played on this putt, but tapped in for par (-2)
#6 - The 235 yard par-3 a bit into the wind as well. Hit a 3-wood well and high. It will be nice when I get my swing to where I want and then feel comfortable getting a Trackman fitted driver and 3-wood so I won't hit these too high shots into the wind. Really an easy up and down, but it checked up to 7 feet and a poor putt so I made bogey (-1)
#7 - Decent driver down the right side. Got really lucky here. Got greedy with a 3-wood from a poor lie and hit it low and right and into the water. Hit another 3-wood okay and thougth I would be in good position to make bogey. Get up there and can't find my 2nd 3-wood, but find my first (I did feel it probably skipped over the water). I then flush a 7-iron with my original shot to 2-feet and tap in for birdie (-2)
#8 - Hit a 8-iron pretty good and right at the flag, but too much and found the bunker. Excellent bunker shot from there to 5-feet (it was going downhill quite a bit) and then drilled the 5-footer for par (-2)
#9 - Decent driver down the middle. I then hit another low 3-wood, but this time down the middle. I then play a fade to a right side pin position and hit it to 9-feet and then drill the birdie putt (-3)
#10 - Good driver and deep. I hit my worst iron shot of the day, a slightly chunky, big push with a 9-iron. Still found the green, 60 feet away. First putt went 8-feet by, but I composed myself and drilled the comebacker for par (-3)
#11 - Good driver down the middle. I've only played this course twice before so I wound up not playing this big oak tree in the middle of the fairway correctly. I wond up crushing a 3-wood and it hit the oak tree, which surprised me (but now I see how it was very possible to hit that tree) and the ball dropped straight down. I had a good shot at the green, but probably lost about 50 yards due to hitting the tree. Hit a flush 7-iron but a bit to the right and not enough club and I was 30-feet away. Hit another putt too hard, but made the 5-foot comebacker. (-3)
#12 - Good driver down the middle, but found a tight, muddy lie. Didn't matter with the PC5's...I just flushed a 5-iron to 30 feet and just missed the birdie try (-3)
#13 - Push faded a driver into the right rough...bad swing. I then hit a nice 6-iron over some trees to the middle of the green. Good speed on the 2-tier putt and tapped in for par (-3)
#14 - Flushed a nice 6-iron with a draw to 13 feet. Bad birdie putt though and made the par (-3)
#15 - good driver down the right side. Played it safe with a 4-iron down the middle. Hit a 9-iron just like I wanted to, but a little too low since it didn't get there. The idea was to hit the middle of the green low and let the ball bounce and check to the back pin. Instead I hit the front part of the green and checked to the middle. Good lag putt and a par tap in (-3)
#16 - Crushed a driver and went into the hazard, but the hazard there is a nice mowed trench before it gets into the thick stuff and I was in the trench. I then hit a decent SW out of there. I'm thinking I shouldn't use driver on this hole, though. Anyway, hit a birdie putt at the cup, but it needed some more umph (-3)
#17 - Hit the Apex PC 3-iron and hit it well, nicely to 30 feet. Not enough break and not enough speed, but still left me with a tap in. As Geoff Mangum likes to say 'good putting is safe putting.' (-3)
#18 - This is a 460 yard hole and I believe I legitimately hit this drive 302 yards. I bombed this one as I teed it up a bit high, moved it up in my stance and just made sure to hit it up on the upswing. And I cracked it right down the middle. I then hit a 7-iron pretty well, but to 30 feet. Saw the putt perfectly and drained it for birdie (-4)
Wow, what a great round for me. The M3 stuff worked great today and I've certainly noticed more distance. I can't tell you how well I hit the PC5's. You can notice a great sound with these irons when I hit them. I can compress the shit out of them most of the time. I will probably play with them like they are for now until I get the swing to where I want it. When that happens, I'll probably experiment with iron shafts and just keep the old shafts just in case I don't like the new ones. I think it's a clubhead thing. And I mean this, I'm making the sound with those clubs that is noticeable and a sound the really good PGA Tour ballstrikers make with the ball.
My putting is getting much better. In the past I would try to hit putts with my left hand or my right hand, now I just use both of them going back and thru. This allows me to hit the putts off the sweetspot more often and control the speed better.
This was a ton of fun. One of those days I thought I could have a round in the 60's, but wasn't quite sure it would happen, but it did and could've been lower. I played with 2 hot shot junior golfers, one a boy and one a girl. They'll probably get big offers to colleges in a couple of years. But today the old man smoked them both. The boy said to me 'it looks like you're just hitting punch shots out there all day long.'
If only he knew the truth.
