Saturday I played Fioranello again in a Stableford competition. Was feeling good coming into the round as my module work has been helping with my rythmn, especially module 6 as I'm beginning to beat the over-acceleration issues I've always had.
Again I started the round with only some putting and chipping practice - so you never know how the first drive will be (a hook into first cut of left side of fairway). The round went OK as I played to handicap (16.9 adjusted to 18 for the course), scoring 88 on a par 70.
Some stats which describe my round:
Fairways hit: 10/13
GIR: 4/18
Scrambles: 1/?
Number of short putts missed (3 feet or less): 3 !
With the driver and 3 wood I'm hooking the crap out of it. However, I played the hook and started everything to the right of the fairway - I'm not comfortable doing that but it worked and so I hit more fairways than ever. The hooking I think is caused by my module 6 work in ABS, and not enough module 3. Also a factor is my irons are flat 5 degrees but my driver/3 woods are regular lie. I'm swinging quite flat these days and need to hold off the face more in my driver swing - I'll have to figure something out.
Hit some nice irons and overall I'm hitting less and less duff shots. My issue of dipping the left shoulder at the ball in transition is lessening and so I can only remember hitting two deep fat shots behind the ball.
Highlights were hitting the long par 4 that is up-hill on top of a mound in regulation and parring the hole, and similarly a par 5 up-hill all the way I hit a nice drive followed by 2 sweet 5-irons for a green in regulation that I parred. It's always nice to start getting birdie opportunities on holes that you once never reached.
Despite only 4 GIRs, I nearly always had a look at the green with my iron approach and many iron shots were just off the green or in a green-side bunker.
My score could have been a personal best if it hadn't been for my putting. All my birdie opportunities were 15 feet or more and I ran the ball well at the hole and just missed all of them - my long range putting is fine, and it has helped using Al Barkow's tip for feeling the putt with the dominant hand.
My score could improve with the short putts. With those putts of 3 feet the hole suddenly appears to be very small! I tend to pull them all left. I need to practice this although when practicing I don't seem to have an issue. I think I could do with a much heavier putter. Also with putts from say between 6 feet and 15 feet I don't seem to make one of them! The problem tends to be the line - not missing by much, but missing all the same.
I had nice rythmn though on most of my irons and drives. The round took 4 hours and 40 minutes, which is actually quite fast for this society I'm a member of, but I did lose the rythmn in the closing 3 holes, missing all fairways and greens which ruined my score somewhat.
