North Shore Golf Club is one of the golf courses I’m a member at in Orlando with my membership program. They are adding a 3rd course soon, Stoneybrook Golf Club, which is located just down the road from Eastwood Golf Club.
North Shore is a Mike Dasher design playing a little over 6,900 yards with a 138 slope from the back tees. I’ve played North Shore 3 times and it’s treated me well so far as I’ve had scores of 71-76-68.
Dasher designed some Canongate courses as well, such as Traditions at Braselton and Bentwater. But given the design of those two courses and North Shore, I would say that either Dasher designed North Shore later on and learned from his previous design experiences or he just designs better on flatter terrain. Not to knock Traditions or Braselton, both decent to solid courses, but North Shore is a far better design.
When you play North Shore, you will be told that the front side is a different type of course design than the back side. They’ll refer to the front side as ‘links golf’, but I like to term it ‘Florida style links’ golf. Meaning that it has a links type of feel to it, but it’s even flatter and instead of seeing pot bunkers, they replace it with much more water. The back nine is your traditional parkland type of course.
I would certainly say the back nine is easier than the front. The front has some very difficult holes after the easy first hole, particularly #3, #6 and #7. On the back nine #12, #14 and #17 can provide some difficulty, but not as tough as the holes on the front.
The best holes on the course are #2, #3, #11, #12 and #14. The weak holes are #1, #6 and #16. My problem with #6 is it’s a 235 yard par-3 and I do not believe that par-3’s should be that long unless they are straight downhill. The best hole on the course is the par-4 3rd hole. It has water beautifully hugging the right side and is long (about 460 yards) with mounds in front of the green making the hole look more picturesque.
Overall I greatly enjoy playing North Shore, but the course does get quite a bit of business and the drive combined with the toll roads tend to keep me away from there more than I would like. But in the end it is worth checking out.
