Played at Sunken Meadow again this morning. It's a 27 hole course. I played the front 9 on the "Green" course. I've played the green each time I've been there this year. The back 9 was the "Blue" course. I haven't played it in a few years.
I hit a small bucked of balls and putted for 15 minutes before my tee time. The last time I actually warmed up like that before a round I shot a new personal record for 9 and 18... today was close to that. It's absolutely necessary for me to find my swing before I head out. I can't just step up to the tee and let 'er fly... one day maybe, but not yet.
1. Dogleg left par 4. 353 yards. Hit 3 iron into the left rough. Ended up under a sapling. Punch 7 iron was hit perfectly under the sapling limbs. Ball skipped onto the green 15 feet right of the pin. Made the put. Birdie... (-1)
2. Dogleg left par 4. 397. Good drive down right side of fairway. 8 iron to 25 feet. 2 putts for par... (-1)
3. Dogleg right par 4. 404 yards. Good drive down the left side of the fairway. Tried to fade it around the dogleg but it went dead straight. Ended up 6" into the rough. 9 iron was hit thin and the ball skipped to the back tier with the pin up front. Three putts later... bogey. (E)
4. Par 3. 201 yards. Playing into the wind I chose my 3i. Hit it thin and left it short in the front bunker. Good bunker shot to 10 feet. 2 putts. Bogey. (+1)
5. Dogleg left par 4. 349 yards. I destroyed this hole the last time I played it... today it got me back, lol. I chunked/healed/fluffed a wood into the trees on the left side of the fairway. I was up against a tree. a few shots later I was on the green and two putted for a double bogey... (+3)
6. Dogleg left par 4. 417 yards. Bombed a drive down the middle. Had exactly 100 yard into the green. Low driving punch SW to 10 feet. Two putts... par (+3)
7. Dogleg left par 5. 483 yards. Thin drive ended in the middle of the fairway but about 20 yards shorter than I'd like. I had 220 to the green, but I had to carry the corner of the dogleg. The trees covering the dogleg aren't very tall, but enough to make me think about laying up. You have no view of the green at all from the fairway. I pulled my 3i into the trees. 3 shots later I was on the green. 10 foot putt went in... for bogey... (+4)
8. Par 3. 165 yards. Playing shorter as it's down hill and we had a light breeze at our backs. 8i stuck 15 ft right of the pin. 2 putts for par... (+4)
9. Slight dogleg right par 5. 472 yards. Bombed a drive down the middle. Had 210 to the middle of the green. 3i was pushed right of the green. My ball was resting on a root, ug! 1st chip stayed in the rough. 2nd chip went 15 ft past the hole. 2 putts later... bogey (+5)
10. Dogleg right par 4. 341. 3i right down the middle. Had 140 to the flag. 9i was pulled to the left side of the green, pin was on the right. 3 putts. bogey... (+6)
11. Dogleg left par 4. 400 yards. This hole got me today. I just made poor choices. I should have hit my 3i off the tee and had a longer shot into the green. The dogleg doesn't leave much room straight away... maybe 230 to the tree line. I tried to draw a 3 wood around the dogleg, got greedy and payed the price. My pall was stymied by a tree. Had to take an unplayable, drop one, etc... 4 shots later I was on the green. 2 putts for a 7... oofah! (+9)
12. Par 3. 135 yards. PW to 20 feet. 3 putts for bogey. (+10)
13. Dogleg right par 5. Blind tee shot. 496 yards. Good drive that ended up in the right rough. The second shot was downhill to the green. I had 215 yards to the center. 4i landed short and bounced onto the green. I had about 45 feet up a slope to the hole, L-to-R break. 3 putts... par! ARGGGGGGGG! (+10)
14. Severe 90* dogleg right par 4. 408 yards. Straight away the fairway ends at about 230 yards. It's super thick rough and forest, so going long through the fairway sucks, but laying up to the corner leaves you a long 2nd shot to an elevated green. I hit the best drive of my life on this hole. A super high 3 wood that carried the trees on the dogleg and ended up in the center of the fairway with 150 to the middle of the green. 8i to 20 feet. Two putts. Par (+10)
15. Par 3. 196 yards. 4i pushed right... hits the cart path, and goes further right. I was under one tree and had to hit under the tree limbs. I had about 20 yards to the flag. Punch 8i ended up on the green. 40 feet or so away. Two putts... Bogey (+11)
16. Severe dogleg (90*) left par 4. 352 yards. Again, I just made a poor tee ball decision. I hit my 3i and tried to draw it around the dogleg. I could have hit a 5i and been left with 180 or so into the green... but noooooo that's not good enough for me, lol. I had 4 or 5 trees between me and the green. I told the guy I was playing with "I'm going to channel my inner Philly Mick." I hit a punch 4i that skipped, skidded, hopped to 15 feet, on the green! Two putts, par. (+11)
17. Dogleg left par 4. 376 yards. Worst drive of the day pulled into the left woods. Provisional found left rough. Long story short... two putts, double bogey, (+13)
18. Par 4, 345 yards. I had nothing to lose at this point. I wasn't going to break 80 for the day. I was already up to 39 strokes on the back nine, so breaking 40 for 9 wasn't doable either... I'm just letting loose on this one!!! I hit a monster drive! This hole is downhill to the start of the fairway then all up hill to the green. If you look straight out at the green from the tee I'd say it's a net 5 yards elevated... but it's severely downhill then uphill. So your drive is ALL carry. I was left with 65 yards to the center of the green. I hit a low, driving SW to 10 feet, made the putt for birdie... WOW, I actually made a putt, lol!! (+12)
I didn't make a putt longer than 10 feet all day, and that 10 footer wasn't until 18. I had 4 three putts and 2 penalty shots. I swear I'll break 80 some day, lol. I haven't been all that comfortable with my 3 wood as of late and my Mizuno MP Fli-Hi 2i is getting a new shaft so I only had 13 clubs. I probably would have hit the 2i on 5 or 6 tee shots today and it certainly would have saved me a few times from tree trouble and penalties... oh well.
All-in-all I very happy to have put together a decent score considering the last few 9 hole rounds I have played.
