Today I played North Shore. I've played 3 different courses since I've been in Orlando...North Shore, Eastwood and Walkabout and so far North Shore has been the best overall of the bunch. Good condition, good design, and generally a good pace of play. Finished in 3:20 today as a 2-some. Hot and little wind. Used the 2 and 4-9 irons of the PC5 and carried my Apex PC 4-iron as well. I think next week I'm going to give the Bounce Sole 1+'s a run again.
#1 - Hooked one into the waste bunker. So-so out of there. 2-putted from 40 feet (E)
#2 - Pulled it a tad and it hit the fairway and went into the hazard. This hazard is playable, you just can't ground the club. So I pull a 9-iron that I hit well, just a bad face pull. Pitch to 15 feet and lip out the par save (+1)
#3 - Hit a driver well, but a big pull with a draw. Hit a 3-wood since I pulled the driver so badly to about 20 yards. Decent pitch to 10 feet and a poor par putt attempt (+2)
#4 - Driver down the right side of the fairway. Caught a 6-iron a little chunky and landed just short and rolled on to 12 feet. Just missed the birdie try (+2)
#5 - Hooked a driver into the waste bunker. Well hit 9-iron but I played it safe to the right side of the green and I was pin high, but 25 feet away. Putt broke a ton and I didn't read that much of a break and made par (+2)
#6 - I just didn't want to pull a 3-wood here because there's trouble left and I pushed a 3-wood and didn't have enough club anyway (238 yard par-3). Pitched to about a foot and kicked in for par (+2)
#7 - Good driver down the middle of the fairway. Pushed a 3-wood down the right side and then pushed a 8-iron right of the green and chipped to a foot and kicked in another par (+2)
#8 - Nice flushed 8-iron to 9-feet and made the birdie (+1)
#9 - Small pull draw with a well hit driver. Good 3-wood from a tight lie on some dead grass and then I pulled a 7-iron and 2-putted nicely from 40 feet (+1)
#10 - I think on this one I held the flex of the shaft with the driver. I haven't felt that with my Cleveland titanium driver yet, but have with the persimmon and some iron shots. Thing was crushed, dead straight with perfect trajectory. Hit a 9-iron beautifully screaming at the flag stick and went 9-feet bye. Hit my first put wayyyy too hard, but made the 4-foot comebackers (+1)
#11 - Another well hit driver that I pulled a bit, but still found the fairway. Hit a good 3-wood and then flushed a 9-iron to 8 feet and made the birdie putt (E)
#12 - Hit a good driver, pulled it a tad though and it took a terrible kick into the left rough and I really didn't have much of a shot. I then made a stupid play trying to hit it under the tree with a 4-iron and wound up well short and next to another tree. I then have to hit a flop shot over a tree. I proceed to hit one of the best flop shots of my life over the tree to 10 inches. I paced it off since it was that great of a shot...43 yard flop shot over a tree with a LW to a pin cut tight to 10 inches. Lovely. (E)
#13 - Good driver down the middle. Hit a good 7-iron but the pin was cut in a weird position. Drilled my first putt about 8 feet bye and missed the comebacker, so my first 3-putt of the day (+1)
#14 - Flushed a 7-iron and it landed pin high, but went down the slope and left me with an uphill putt over a bowl of sorts. Almost made it and tapped in for par (+1)
#15 - Pretty good driver down the middle and then I flushed my 2-iron to be in safe play. Good thing I hit this down the right side because I had too much club and had I gone about 5 yards left, I would've been in the drink. I then Hit a SW well, but had poor distance control and wound up 40 feet short. Then I drained the birdie putt. Go figure (E)
#16 - I really shouldn't hit driver on this but I did anyway and hit it well but found the hazard. This is another playable hazard and I hit a good SW to 10 feet and lipped out the birdie try (E)
#17 - Flushed a 2-iron to 21 feet and made a piss poor attempt. Did everything but moved my head and this putt breaks to the right, so I missed well right. Good speed though so an easy par putt (E)
#18 - Tried to tee the driver up high and hit it on the upswing for extra distance. Hit it well, but I didn't catch it on the upswing, so it shot up into the air with a high spin rate and now I have a ton of distance into the hole. Hit a 3-hybrid square, but hooked it left. Almost went O.B. Hit my pitch short of the green. Then hit another chip to a foot and saved bogey (+1)
I do feel like it's getting there when I'm hitting a lot of shots solid and feel like I struggled, but still hit 12 GIR and shot 73. I think if I can get M3 down pretty well one day and have a non-windy day and a good day with the putter, I think I can shoot 65 or better at North Shore. I really believe that.
But I had to go to the range afterwards and tweak my backswing a bit after looking at it on video. I tend to get lazy pivoting in the backswing and then get lazy with the footwork coming thru. June weather in Orlando makes you lazy
I'd like to get on a Trackman soon to see some numbers on my swing, particularly with the driver. I hit the Taylor Made Penta golf ball, it's really really good. Goes a long ways and is very soft. Anyway, it's getting there..just have to keep plugging away.
