I played North Shore today as I think Eastwood had a tournament. Course was in good shape, but greens were a bit slow. I used the Hogan Bounce Sole 1+ irons today with my PC5 2-iron.
I also wanted to try something new and keep a stat I call 'Good Speed Putts.' I'll try to break down what I consider a 'good speed putt.'
5 feet to 10 feet = 2" to 24" past the cup
11 to 30 feet = 0" to 24" past the cup
31+ feet = 12" short to 24" past the cup
I'll probably wind up tweaking this a bit, but I want to get super conscious of my speed as a way to improve my speed. As you can see, I want the speed/touch to be consistent, going no more than 24" past the cup. With the 5 to 10 foot putts, I figure that if it dies at the cup, that's really a speed that is tough to make many putts with. Or at least that is how it feels to me. At over 30 feet long, those are putts you rarely make and the #1 goal should be to 2-putt from there and hopefully make a 1-putt. So getting it 1 foot short or less is accomplishing the goal and I would imagine that if you are adept at getting putts from that length 1 foot or less short of the cup, eventually you'll develop good speed and start sinking some.
#1 - toe hooked a driver into the waste bunker. It's a weird mid-range bunker shot from here and I got it out, but to 48 feet. I then lipped out for birdie, great putt. (E)
#2 - Yesterday on the blog somebody asked me how far I was hitting it with my swing changes from Module 3 of ABS. I can say confidently I'm hitting the ball further with this action. Much more speed being generated and the extension after impact is much better. Here's a great case because this driver was smoked to 102 yards. Before I would hit it good and go to about 120 yards. But, this left me in a tough position because I don't have a PW or a GW and I am not confident swinging a SW full out. So I choked up on a 9-iron and pulled it a bit. 2-putted from there (E)
#3 - Good driver down the right side. Flushed a 5-iron to about 18 feet and a decent putt, but it didn't go in. (E)
#4 - Nice driver down the pipe. Hit a 6-iron and had a face-block fade well right. Poor shot. Hit a beautiful flop, but the slope rolled in 9-feet away. Not enough juice on the par save and I make a bogey (+1)
#5 - FINALLY I hit the fairway on this hole. But the pin was tucked well in back and there's water back there. And I don't have a GPS. If I did, I could've gotten it back there. But I wind up 2-putting from 40 feet. (+1)
#6 - Not a favorite hole of mine. I teed a driver low and hit it well and just a little left and was pin high left of the green. Hit a so-so chip to 8-feet and missed the par save (+2)
#7 - Good driver down the middle. Good 3-hybrid up the gut and then a nice 8-iron to 15 feet. Good putt, but a little too much speed and I tapped in for par (+2)
#8 - Bad swing with a 8-iron, but still found the green. 2-putted from 50 feet, nice speed on the birdie try (+2)
#9 - Good driver down the middle, followed by a good 3-wood. Pulled a 9-iron slightly and 2-putted from 21 feet (+2)
#10 - Good driver right down the middle. Hit a 9-iron nicely to 12 feet and made a nice, big breaking birdie putt (+1)
#11 - Another good driver down the middle. Pulled a well hit 3-wood, but wound up fine. Hit a decent 9-iron to 20 feet and 2-putted for par (+1)
#12 - Over-drawed a driver into the left rough. Tried to hit a low draw around the tree, but caught it fat. Then I pitched nicely to 5-feet and drained the putt. (+1)
#13 - Nice driver down the pipe and then I decided to take dead aim at a right placed flag figuring I was hitting some pulls today and I wanted to go for it. Flushed a 6-iron, but pushed it a tad and it hit the side of the green and kicked hard off the green. Decent flop to 12 feet, but missed the par save (+2)
#14 - Pushed a 6-iron a bit, but that was fine and left me with a 30 foot putt. Good first putt and tapped in for par (+2)
#15 - didn't feel comfortable with how I was aligned and wound up hitting a dead push-fade. But, I wound up in good position. Hit a hard 3-iron low under the trees to about 100 yards. Then I hit a SW to 5-feet and drained the birdie (+1)
#16 - Went for it as I can't convince myself to not hit driver here. Found the fairway, but there was a tree in my way. I hit a bump and run with a 6-iron and got it on the green to 30 feet. Good birdie putt speed and tapped in for par (+1)
#17 - Just missed a 2-iron a tad and it landed a foot short of the green and stopped there because of the slope on that part of the green. Decent pitch to 8-feet. Lipped out the par save (+2)
#18 - Big driver down the middle. Hit a 6-iron well, but pushed it and I didn't have enough club. Had a weird lie and hit my pitch shot too hard to about 20 feet. Good speed on the putt, and tapped in for bogey (+3)
I struck the ball better than my stats show, but some bad misses and some bad gambles hurt me. I also didn't get putts to fall. I have no idea how well 8/18 on good speed putts is. But, we'll see as I go along. Hit the driver and the irons pretty well today.
