Alright, I'm beat...so I'll try to make this somewhat quick for me and then I'm headed to bed. I played Pine Barrens at World Woods today. I didn't play until the twilight rates which were only $30 which includes a cart. You can see more about World Woods at www.worldwoods.com
This is a Fazio design and one of the largest lots of land for golf I've ever come across. In fact, they may have the largest practice green I've ever seen. The Pine Barrens course was designed along the same lines as Pine Valley, the #1 ranked course in golf magazines since I can remember. Fazio is a member at Pine Valley. He calls Pine Barrens 'his best work.' And I agree. I generally like Fazio's courses, but I don't go nuts over them like most people do. But this is certainly a masterpiece. Just outstanding. It's in Brooksville, FL...which means it is truly out in the middle of nowhere. The course was in good condition and the weather was really quite good. In fact I golfed with 2 native Floridians who said they don't this weather until October.
#1 - Decent driver down the right side. Flushed a 6-iron at the flag and it just went to the back. Little strong on the first putt, but made the comebacker (E)
#2 - Hit the driver pretty well but left with a tough lie from 200 out into the wind. Tried a 3-hybrid and wound up short and to the right. Didn't see the massive break on the pitch and wound up 20 feet to the left. Good first effort and made bogey. (+1)
#3 - Flushed a 6-iron a little right of the flag, but it went short of te green. Good flop-chip to 5 feet and drained the par save (+1)
#4 - A split fairway par-5. I took the longer fairway and hit a decent driver to that. Then I hit a crappy persimmon 3-wood into the waste bunker. The thing with Pine Barrens is ALL OF THE SAND is a waste bunker. I then hit a great shot from this super steep waste bunker to 4-feet and made the birdie (E)
#5 - Good driver piped down the middle. Hit a decent 7-iron to 30 feet and 2-putted from there. (E)
#6 - Nice driver down the middle. Hit a pretty good persimmon, but it faded on me at the last second. This left me in the fairway, but with a tree in my way. I hit a SW, but really couldn't go for the flag and 2-putted from 30 feet (1st putt almost went in) E
#7 - Crunched a 3-hybrid to the front part of the green. Had about 75 feet and knocked my first putt about 8-feet bye and then missed the comebacker. 3-jack for bogey (+1)
#8 - Good driver down the middle. Flushed a 6-iron, but it came out a bit low because the lie was a bit downhill. Still wound up to 30 feet and I 2-putted from there (+1)
#9 - Very nice driver down the middle. Hit a 4-iron pretty well, but it faded a bit and went over the green. Easy up and down though and I did just that (+1)
#10 - Big push faded 4-iron. This was a tough up and down and my pitch was good, but it hit something and knocked about 8-feet short. But I drilled another par save (+1)
#11 - Horrific drive here that went well, to the right I had some sort of shot, but should have never tried it and I hit the trees. I then punched it thru the woods and hit a flop at the flag, but 20 feet bye. I then drained the 20-footer. Great putt, but to save bogey (+2)
#12 - Easy hole and I hit a so-so driver. Followed up by a so-so 3-wood and then a decent SW to 20 feet, but can't make the putt (+2)
#13 - This hole has 2 seperate greens that it uses. They used the green on the right today. I hit a decent driver that basically was a pull slice to the middle of the fairway...so it didn't go very far. I then hit a horrible 3-wood into the trees. I got lucky and had an open pitch shot which I hit to 8-feet, but I missed the par save (+3)
#14 - Good driver down the middle. Poor 3-wood effort, but I wound up okay. I then hit a LW to 15 feet, but the putt never broke (+3)
#15 - Very good driver down the pipe. Hit a SW to 8-feet and this time I drain the birdie (+2)
#16 - Hit a 3-iron well, but it basically sliced a bit into the waste bunker. Another great shot out of the waste bunker to 2-feet and kicked in for par (+2)
#17 - Pretty good driver down the middle. Flushed a 5-iron to 4-feet and drained the putt (+1)
#18 - Best driver of the day down the middle. Then I hit a 5-iron a little long to 40 feet, but made a nice 2-putt from there (+1)
I was working on some things with my swing and didn't feel real comfortable until about 14 or so. But, I performed pretty well on a course I never played for, so I'll take it. Putted quite well today as well.
