Today I played Eastwood as I slept in from being super tired after yesterday's round. Another great day for Florida summer. Course in pretty good condition, but wet with rain just hitting. Today I was working on some things in my backswing, mainly not getting flat and lazy with my turn and not getting my right knee locked at the top of the swing.
#1 - Good persimmon 3-wood down the middle. I flushed a 6-iron right past the flag and then 2-putted from 20 feet. Good first putt (E)
#2 - Good driver but I tried to draw it and it stayed straight. I then hit a decent persimmon 3-wood up there. Caught a bit of a flier on the 3rd and went 20 feet bye. Hit my first putt 2-feet short and made par (E)
#3 - Flushed a 5-iron. Too hard on the first putt, but made the 3-foot comebacker (E)
#4 - Pretty good driver, but it kicked left on me and then I played it like a par-5 and hit a 3-hybrid short. Poor pitch and then a 2-putt from 15 feet (+1)
#5 - Hit an upswing driver and probably did not get enoug of a positive attack angle for optimal distance, but I still probably gained 25 yards. Hit a 5-iron flush, but hit a push fade right of the green. That's certainly my trouble shot right now. Easy up and down (+1)
#6 - Pretty good driver down the middle. Push faded a 3-iron. Should've hit a 3-hybrid or maybe a 3-wood. Flushed a 9-iron, but it pulled a bit as the ball was above my feet. Good first putt here, but just missed (+1)
#7 - Small push fade here, but still found the fairway. Flushed a 6-iron to about 1.5 feet and kicked in for birdie (E)
#8 - Push faded a 4-iron but still in good shape and 2-putted from 30 feet (E)
#9 - I aim at the first fairway on this hole and I crushed one pretty long for me. I then hit a push slice with a 5-iron and a lousy up and down effort (+1)
#10 - Tried to draw a driver and I did, but not enough and then it took a bad kick into the right rough. The lie looked impossible, but then I figured the ball was standing right up so I could hit a driver. I should not have done it but I got away with it. I then caught a 4-iron a little thin and towards the heel, but it went to 5-feet. Go figure. I then drained the birdie putt. Weird hole today. (E)
#11 - Hit an upswing driver much like I did on #5 today. Pretty good, but not optimal...still gained 25 yards and down the middle. Hit a push fade 5-iron in the right rough. Good pitch to a foot and kicked in for par (E)
#12 - skied a persimmon 3-wood a bit, but almost made the green. Decent pitch, but the ball checked about 8-feet short and missed the par save (+1)
#13 - This hole they need to do something about. You can't see anything on your approach and you have very little idea of where to aim. I thought I hit a 8-iron perfectly on the approach and I wind up 30 feet right of the cup and make par (+1)
#14 - Pulled a 4-iron and it was too much club and went into the water. Then I duffed a LW and was thinking it's been a long time since I've made a triple or worse. But I then pitch to 2-feet and kick in for double (+3)
#15 - Bad swing with a driver, but found the fairway. Heeled a 5-iron, but it went to 25 feet and 2-putted for par (+3)
#16 - Bad driver to the right rough. Followed it with a good 3-hybrid and a good 8-iron. Too much speed on the first putt and made par (+3)
#17 - Decent driver, but not much umph on it. Badly pulled 4-iron into the bunker. Bad long bunker shot. Almost chipped in for par (+4)
#18 - Big pull-fade with not much power to it. Hit a 5-iron to 30 feet and 2-putt for par (+4)
Not a good day after a promising first 8 holes. Homer Kelley was really onto something when he talked about the importance of power in the golf swing and if you're not hitting the ball as powerfully as you usually do, there's usually a problem.
I went on the range after the round and saw one problem, getting back to flat and lazy again in the backswing. My guess is I was probably good on the front side and started to relax on the back nine.
I decided to say screw it and work on not getting laid off at the top of the swing. I was going to put it off until later on in the ABS modules, but I think it's clearly effecting my game now. 2 weeks ago it wasn't. Good news is it took some time, but I finally got it and you should see a noticeable difference in next week's swing update. After awhile I started flushing some 4-irons and then flushed a 7-iron right over the 150 marker on my last shot. I sure do love that Casio.
