From Geoff Mangum's Optimal Putting book drills section:
"set a 2x4 board on the green along a target line and run the heel of the putter along the far vertical side of the board with the putter face staying square to the vertical surface of the board for an in-plane stroke"
I don't think anyone putts like this. Can anyone find video or make a video of a golfer doing this? The body motion requires you to rock your shoulders in a vertical plane which just seems impossible to me. Dave Pelz also teaches this stroke, his putting track training aid helps you move the putter like this.
"now set the toe of the putter near the inside vertical surface of the board and use a “putting arc” path for the stroke action in which the stroke curls inside in the backstroke and inside off the board in the thru-stroke in a symmetrical pattern"
This seems to be a more natural path that the putter would take if you move your shoulders around your spine while bent over to the ball. Stan Utley teaches this stroke.
"then set the toe of the putter near the inside vertical surface of the board again and this time use a “putting arc” path for the stroke action in which the stroke curls inside in the backstroke but conforms to the line of the board coming forward and from the middle of the stroke going thru to the follow-thru"
This sounds like an inside down the line stroke. There are some training aids out there that that help you make a stroke like this.
I'm not sure that Mangum would want the heel of the putter to come off the plane in the down the line part of the stroke like in the image. I think he would want it to remain square. Stan Utley says this kind of down the line action is a fault.
Any of these sound like your stroke?
