I was testing out a new driver yesterday at the range in slightly damp weather. The pro shop ordered it in because they didn't have a demo with my requested specs. They told me to go and have a hit with it but to keep the shrink wrap plastic on. They also put a strip of plastic tape on the face in case I wanted to return it. So, in effect, I have two layers of plastic (one less thick than the other) as well as a sticker on the sweetspot (which came with the club).
This perhaps would have been self-evident to the more knowledgeable people on this forum, but having a hit with the new driver was perplexing. The ball would just die quickly in the air, or it would fly for a 100m then turn left or right unpredictably (sometimes on the same shot). No matter which way I tried to work it, ball flight was unpredictable, and I was barely reaching the 170m mark (I swing at around 100mph).
On the launch monitor at the shop, with one layer of tape and in dry conditions, my numbers were acceptable, not amazing, but definitely not reflecting the ball flight I had on the range.
Could anyone explain what exactly was happening here?
