This time I was playing Traditions of Braselton. With the weather supposed to get really bad come Friday, getting on a course was tough. I tried Windermere...packed. Drove 30 minutes to Hamilton Mill....packed. Then drove an extra 15 minutes to Traditions, a club that is usually wide open, and that was packed.
It's a Rocky Rocquemore design and has come a long way since I played it for the first time a year ago and now I think it's a decent overall course with very good greens. I was using the Hogan IPT's and I think Traditions is 6,800 yards long and a 134 slope.
Anyway, here's the rundown:
#1 - This is a tough hole for me since it's a tough par-4 for anybody, but I can't use a driver as it doglegs left and the fairway narrows dramatically at the 150 yard marker. Pulled a 3-wood off the tee and was left with no shot. punched it out to 140 and then hit an 8-iron (the IPT's are about 1 to 2 clubs shorter than my Mizuno's) and left myself with 25 feet. Made a good run at it, made the 4 foot comebacker (+1)
#2 - Hit a decent drive down the middle. 3-hybrid on second shot (screwy lie) that went really low. Had 120 into the green and into the wind and hit a 9-iron to 7 feet and made the birdie (E)
#3 - Hit a nice 7-iron on the par 3 (160 with some wind). Pulled a tad, made the green, 2 putted from 30 feet (E)
#4 - Mediocre drive into a pretty easy par-5. Wind was tailing so the ball went pretty far and I was in great position. Hit a fantastic 4-iron from 190 that landed about 3 feet from the cup and wound up 15 feet away. Made the 15 footer for eagle. Boo-yeah. (-2)
#5 - Decent drive that ended up well with the tailwind. Hit an 8-iron from 140 an left with a 20 footer. Just missed on the 20 footer, tapped in for par (-2)
#6 - Solid drive, but into a heavy wind. Had 175 into the green, but into the wind and into an elevated green. Hit 4-iron and pushed it a bit into the right greenside bunker. So-so bunker shot, left the 12 foot putt too high. (-1)
#7 - Solid drive to about 150 with an elevated green. Hit a great 7-iron that landed 3 feet from the cup and went to 15 feet. Drilled the putt for birdie (-2)
#8 - Par-3 surrounded by water. It's about 170 into the green and the green is narrow. You're hitting downhill which is one less club. Anyway, put it into the drink for the 4th time in a row that I've played the round. Hit a shot from the drop area to 15 feet (it's only about a 50 yard shot from the drop). And knocked in the 15 footer. Now the putter is starting to go, but the wind is really, really picking up (probably up to 25 mph) (-1)
#9 - Decent drive down the middle. The 2nd shot is straight uphill, about a 2 club incline and the wind was blowing in our face. I remember hitting a 4-iron, but can't remember the distance. I hit it well, but wound up wayyyy short. I did hit it high, but I think I landed just short and it rolled downward. Chipped a wedge to 15 feet, missed the putt (E)
#10 - first of back-to-back par 5's. Hit a big drive down the left side. Hit a high 3-wood (I need to go to 13*) and hit a 9-iron to 20 feet and missed the putt (E)
#11 - Hit a super high driver and hit a very good 3-wood. Found myself short on a 7-iron on the approach. Hit a beautiful chip with the 'Equalizer' and tapped in. In the next week or so I plan on doing a video post on my blog showing some differences in the IPT's vs. current irons. (E)
#12 - 237 yard par-3 that goes uphill. Hit a 3-wood well, but pulled it. Flopped to 10 feet, missed the putt (+1)
#13 - Toughest hole on the course, hit a driver to 150, but it was really a poor swing and hit. Hit a 7-iron fat and was well short. Pitched on, missed a 20 footer. (+2).
#14 - Super short par-3. Hit a 9-iron pretty well and it was fading in nice, but it caught the slope and spun back to about 40 feet. Had great speed, but didn't break. Made a 3-footer on the comeback. (+2)
#15 - Typically this is a very easy hole where you hit driver and have about 50 yard to the green. But we were into a heavy wind and I hit a good drive and had a 9-iron fall short. I then chipped in. It's been awhile since I chipped in. (+1).
#16 - Hit a good driver down the left side of the fairway. Had a 5-iron into the green, but reverted to my old downswing where I got too upright with the shoulder turn and over-accelerated the hands and wound up hitting hit thin and fading it. Wound up well short. Chipped on and left myself with a 20 footer. Two putted (+2)
#17 - Long par-3 over water. Pulled out the 2-iron and striped it, but pushed it a little and the wind faded it to the right. Then hit an excellent pitch that almost went in and had a tap in (+2).
#18 - Best driver of the day. But, left with a funky lie and had to hit a 3-hybrid which I didn't hit that well. Left with 150 to the hole, but the approach is well uphill. Hit a 5-iron quite well on the green, but had a 40 footer that had to go thru a big tier. Nicely 2-putted. (+2).
Score: 74 (+2)
