My friends and I used to think of the best possible scramble 4-some in golf. In fact, I think it would be neat to see a PGA Tournament for big stakes and make it a 4-man scramble. Anyway, here’s my current ‘dream team.’
1. Jamie Sadlowski – A bit of a risk since most of his other skills he’d be well below his teammates, but he’s here for driving distance purposes and turning 430 yard par-4’s into par-3’s for the team.
2. Phil Mickelson – He’s a great fit with Sadlowski because he can hit the ball a ton and he’s great at gouging and making long putts. This fits the team perfectly when Sadlowski hits a deep one that goes into the rough, but is till playable or into a green side bunker on a 440 yard par-4. Or if Sadlowski drives the green and they have a 50 foot putt for eagle. I’m not high on Mickelson’s putting, but he does make a lot of bombs.
3. Brian Gay – He’s one of the top 10 putters on Tour. Finished 10th last year in the ‘putts gained’ stat. And he’ll lead the field in driving accuracy. So you have a guy that doesn’t have to worry about distance and when Sadlowski and Mickelson miss, he will keep them in the fairway and can make all of the putts.
4. Kenny Perry – His ballstriking is still good and he’s pretty long off the tee. So if Mickelson and Sadlowski are out, we’re not stuck with Gay’s short distance off the tee every time. Plus, he’s a capable putter.
I’d have the tee order go Sadlowski, Gay, Perry and Mickelson. We know what Sadlowski would be there for…to hit it deep. No sense in beating around the bush. Putting order I would go Sadlowski, Perry, Mickelson and Gay. I figure these guys would shoot about -22 to -25 at North Shore =]
