I had the privilege of putting on the practice green today at Congressional. The AT&T is there next weekend. I have never putted on greens that were that good. I felt like I was painting on the green, not putting. It was so easy to make putts. There was absolutely no oscillation near the cup. The ball stayed true throughout the entire putt. Simply incredible. At least 1.5-2 stroke difference between those greens and the average country club. (I'ved played on top 10, 50 and 100 courses in my life and nothing was as smooth as those greens. They could have cut those greens down to 13 on the stimp without any problem. They were 11 today).
BTW - The 18th at Congressional (the old course) is a 524 par 4. Bubba Watson hit driver lob wedge into that green in the U.S. Open. I thought the hole was a par 5. Its severely downhill, but you have to be a man to hit that fairway from the shoot off that tee. Beautiful course. I keep my head down and mouth shut when I'm there for a lesson. Nobody paid $125,000+ initiation to listen to me.

I had the privilege of putting on the practice green today at Congressional. The AT&T is there next weekend. Well, three weeks, but sure. "Soon." (I'ved played on top 10, 50 and 100 courses in my life and nothing was as smooth as those greens. They could have cut those greens down to 13 on the stimp without any problem. They were 11 today). Curiousity question: how do you know what they were?

I am pretty sure we have a little tournament at The Olympic Tournament next weekend.
That being said I am jealous of you getting to play at congressional. That course is gorgeous on TV.

My mistake. The tournament isn't next week.
How did I know the stimp? That's easy. I was there for an Aimpoint lesson and the assistant knows the stimp each day. Such an advantage to have greens that role true all the way through the putt. The last 12" we're perfectly true. I can only imagine the cost to get greens to that level.

The new AimPoint is great. Much easier to make a read.

The club my dad belongs too measures and posts it each day, kinda cool. That's kind of why I asked: most likely the stimp they determine is wrong. They are probably close, but it's not uncommon to be off 6-18".

I mean if I am used to what the club says is 10.5 and today they right 11.5 I should know that is 1 ft longer than what it normally is. Not good enough to make that awesome computer line on TV sure, but certainly useful for me.

It matters greatly if you're using Aimpoint. I know that the USGA computer mapped the greens for the US Open at Congressional. That type of info is incredible. However, greens can change shape over time due to aerating. There still is an art to green reading even with Aimpoint. It just gets one closer.
AimPoint forces me to be more of a "drip" putter on faster greens. The greens at my home course are 8.5-9 on average and relatively flat. That has caused me to be a more aggressive putter.

AS long as they are consistently off does it really matter? Two part answer. 1) Yes, it matters if you do AimPoint. 2) I think that a lot of people are told "the greens are 12 today" when really they're 10. Like a badge of honor for a superintendent, and they like to lie, because the membership puts a high demand on "fast greens." I just find that practice to be kind of... lousy. I don't really care that much, so I've kept my reply short, but that's what I meant.

I really don't know how they determine the stimp on the course, I don't use aimpoint so I find the information useful....generally they list it 11 to 12 and its eye opening because they are faster then just about any course I have played locally. So when other clubs say they are running 12, either they are off or my dads club are off, but one thing is certain is they were slower than they 11 or 12 listed from a relation standpoint.

Generally it's all about the money! $$$ = fast greens and good stimp readings.

My friend works at a course in The Villages and occasionally sets the pin positions. He measured the stimp using stimp tool and it came to 10 and for me using AimPoint I had it at 8.
If you're working at a private club, many members will really complain unless the stimps are off the charts which is really unfair when the weather conditions won't allow for it. Many of the ritzy, private clubs have members who are CEO's and owners of companies who are used to a 'get it done, one way or another' mentality. But, they really don't know what 12 on the stimp or 10 on the stimp really is.
