Give us a hint, is it something with the hair?

Nope.
It's not what you think you are looking at (yes, it is a woman). I'll give it until noon tomorrow and I'll give the answer.

I have seen the picture before, but it was over a year ago. I can't remember what for. A photography blog i think. Yours doesn't have the same reality as the others which might mean it was painted or just compressed so many times it has lost it realness. Not sure.
Will be interested to hear.

Red color is lifted up by photoshop so that the brown hair looks red. Enlarged picture shows that in the pigment of her nose.
Just guessing.

The crazy part of the picture? (see below for answer)
It's not a photo.
It's actually a drawing using ballpoint pens.

The reason I guessed CGI (which was sort of close) was a few spots in her hair that looked "flat" rather than out of focus. Regardless, that's pretty amazing if true.

to me it looks a bit like a drawing on the right side of the girls face. I doesn't really look like a natural shadow from the hair, but more of a drawing.

I can see drawing in the hair and in her neck and certain spots on her face, and some other stuff, now that I know what to look for. But I had to enlarge it and hold the laptop like 6 inches from my face, and that's after you said it was a drawing. It's hard to believe that it's completely hand drawn with ball point pens, particularly the flesh tones on the face. Amazing work.
