A few things. First I checked with Tour Spec and the Ryoma driver does conform. It's a wonderful club. Great looking and even the wimp that I am ends up hitting the ball a good 250 or so with many more yards available for me and God knows how many more yards are available for the real men among us More importantly I guess: i spent an hour or so hitting balls this morning after working out with a new device that Martin Chuck of Tourstriker fame has given me to try. Martin is a fine teacher and a great guy. I will fill everyone in on it and how it works in an upcoming post. Working hard but I have one shortcoming that just won't go away :-( I can't keep the lag as long as I would like -- or need. I also move my head in front of the ball and wonder if when all is said and done that is the reason. The first swing involve my swinging left drill: playing the ball forward and comitting to the shot and going left thru impact and beyond. it's among my best looking swings. on many of the other swings you cannot see much of my back DTL soon after impact. Not opening up fast enough Anyone with good ideas about the angles? It shocks me that I can play good golf with this flaw. Before I die, I am going to figure this out and get it right. www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Z6VKqgi_lc

Sorry if I caused you any stress about the club, tightdraw. I looked it up in Japanese first, and the information didn't say there were two versions of the club. I checked the USGA listings also and saw there is indeed a conforming version. Hit it well!

No sweat Fullback. I played yesterday with my brothers and managed a 75 or 3 over on a Robt Trent Jones Sr course called Lyman Orchards here in CT. We played from the whites as my brothers are reluctant to give the blues or tips a try. So i can't get too crazy over my play. I played around my flaws. The course was soaked -- they should have given us Arks instead of golf carts -- so there was no forward roll to be had and the greens hadn't been cut since my Bar Mitzvah. In any case I am getting the hang of the Ryoma driver and even my brothers' hit it straight which is an accomplishment.
The good news is that iTeach has chimed in on whats ailing me and it seems to make sense. His view is that my club looks open on the downswing and so I flip to make sure I return it to square. I've been doing it to some degree or other for ever and had enough game over the years to keep me successful enough at it to play well He suggested a plan to change the strike and I will keep you abreast as I progress -- with videos and a comedy routine. (not my own of course).
If you want to see me in finer clothing ;D than in these vids, you can go to the Stetson Law School website and find the link to the commencement ceremonies and catch me receiving my Honorary Degree and giving the commencement speech to the graduates. Many were caught sleeping; other's threatened suicide from boredom. My wife applauded however :-)
With the exception of my one and only hole -in -one, it was the highlight of my adult life (which as it happens commenced only recently). TD

What I really like about your swing is that there is great rhythm without a bunch of starting and stopping, and you clear into your left side without a bunch of pivot stall, club is in the right positions.

Thanks Greg,
I think I am close and if it ever stops raining I am going to work on a drill that iTeach suggested and see if that eliminates the flip. I think the motion is good and repeatable and if i could get my arms more in syn with the rotation, I might actually find nirvana -- or peace of mind.
I will settle for less than peace of mind if I could hit the ball well

i seem to be living in overdrive. yesterday we had 8 hours of faculty meetings. Halfway through you want to shoot your colleagues; 3/4 way through you realize it would just be easier to shoot yourself. In any case, I had work to do in NYC today so rushed after a meeting to the range on a course on the way to NYC to try the drill iTeach suggested. I felt really good doing it. supposed to be basically 9-3 drill with the clubface always pointing down to the ground to avoid open face. well i hit mostly solid low shots to the left along with the ocassional shank which is pretty foreign to me.. well as you see i tookl the swing back to p3 and not hip high. net result is that i am closer on the way down to better impact aliggnments and i love the release finish around the body. still plenty of work to be done. Here are two vids. imagine shorter backswing :-) www.youtube.com/watch?v=iUuY1b_hMmYwww.youtube.com/watch?v=UiA5r9RZtl8

played yesterday with my brother at Wind Watch in Long Island. Fun day, well maintained course of interesting design. too expensive and far too crowded. guys in front hitting from back tees could barely reach the lady's tee . and spent each hole fishing for balls in the water -- and not just theirs. I could have shot them. so hard to get a rhythm going. Shot an 80 which is my high for the year (other than Pebble Beach in 40 mph winds), but largely due to a couple of ugly holes and no birdies. Afterwards we took videos. I focused on doing the drill that iTeach had recommended. Here is one vid of me doing the drill -- again my backswing is too long -- but the impact alignments are much better and i was able to keep the club in line with the left arm beyond impact. I sent to iTeach and he concurred. www.youtube.com/watch?v=jDtIuseAok4I then asked about how to proceed from here and his reply was insightful. basically his suggestion with me mirrors the TGM approach using pitching wedge going from chip to punch to pitch to educate the hands. the difference is using a longer club. his insight was that as you go beyond hip high the tendency is to fan open the club and that you have to have sense awareness of what the proper impact alignment is to make sure that you can avoid the flip. the aim is to keep the bent right wrist through and beyond impact. ultimately the key to doing this for me will involve more axis tilt to get the right shoulder down the plane line a bit and a straight line delivery path. All in steps. in effect after all these years back to TGM-ish insights for me. Roughly the same things Spencer has suggested. Indeed very similar to what Jeff Mann has suggested all along but from a different point of view.

sorry folks but here is the latest. ironies. I used a thing called the perfect connection and took the best divots in years. hit the ball great for me. a little high as my angle of approach was steepening. I was anxious to see pictures, but guess what, swing was good -- arms and body in sync -- BUT no stopping the flip and the club head throwaway. ironic that i have NO throwaway on chips or punches -- but anything beyond p3 and all hell breaks loose. This must be the end of days :-)
I'm nothing is not consistent

What is your ball flight right now? Is there any contact issues?
The reason you dont throwaway chips and pitches, punch shots is a lot like myself, pivot is not all that required on those shots, at least not had the type of speed that a full shot requires.

OK. The semester is over and I am now officially dominated by my non-teaching obsessions: golf and research. I wake up at 5 and write till 10am. My current paper is called the Architecture of Jurisprudence and I will send it to anyone who is having difficulty sleeping. It will be part of my next book which I will sell to all blog members with my insomniac's guarantee. If you have any difficulty sleeping, pick any of my books up and open to any page. if you are not sound asleep within ten pages I will give you your money back. ;D But at 10 i turn to golf and this morning i went into my back yard and took two vids of drills recommended to me. The first by Jeff Mann to determine both my level of flexibility and to see if i could hit without running out of right arm. plastic balls one at normal position, one six inches in front. intention is to hit the front ball and no doubt will hit the one at normal position. idea is to see what my impact alignments look like at first ball. Not bad Second is Chuck Evans drill. self explanatory. place one ball at right foot position and take swings missing it. then put a ball down at normal position and hit it while still missing the one at the right foot. i did it fine and guess what. No flip at all. good axis tilt as needed and good alignments. There is hope. www.youtube.com/watch?v=uMZekvmi3SI&feature=mfu_in_order&list=ULwww.youtube.com/watch?v=HkMyQx9JMVw&feature=autoplay&list=UL6OsSGZkEoIQ&index=24&playnext=1
