I wonder where all that axis tilt came from in the first place. Must have been a very bad place! Take care! I can't remember how it started exactly. It's really weird though... for the past year I've been waking up at 4:30am and at 4:30pm I get dizzy and black out for a few seconds. Strange...

5 iron. push-draw. Better right arm at P4 and P5 than previous swings...
8 iron. push-draw. I need to slow down the transition, it's a struggle. I get less CF as the clubs get shorter, but I don't know that I'll ever be able to (or want to) change to a full CP release.

Lots of updates lately, lol... trying hard to ingrain a few feelings:
1. A pause at P4 to quiet my transition and keep the club back on the plane 2. I was getting a little open to the plane from P2-P4... getting back to square 3. Breaking the finish to help slow the overtaking rate and hopefully improve ball flight consistency from shot-to-shot.
5 iron DTL full speed
5 iron DTL 210 fps

5 iron Front 210 fps
8 iron Front full speed and 210 fps:

I had an absolutely crappy range session this morning. As close as these recent swings come to matching the changes Spencer and I are working on, I realized this morning that I need to make some MAJOR changes to my tempo. I just swing way too fast with my hands, and despite recent successess with my ball striking I am nowhere close to where I want to be.
Does it matter that I can hit my PW 150 if I can only hit 6 GIR during a round of golf? I had 108 to the flag on #18 at Bethpage Black a few weeks ago. I pulled out my 60* and hit it to the right of the flag, but 108 yards... why do I feel the need to be able to hit a 60* wedge 108 yards? That's not bragging believe me. Another two hards to the right and I would have been in a bunker with a 10-foot lip! I would much rather have pulled out a GW and knocked it to within 5 feet, but I don't have that shot yet. Do I play 7,000+ yard tracks week-in and week-out? Nope...
I believe THIS to be the biggest reason why I can shoot 39 on the back at Bethpage Black and follow that up with a 41 at my local 3,200 yard muni... I'm just simply not consistent enough. I can't get close enough on each hole to give myself a shot at birdie, and a tap-in for par. Until I'm hitting 12 or 13 GIR I don't see why I need to swing so fast at the ball.
How do I change my tempo? It ain't gonna' be easy. It's part of my swing's DNA at this point... but I don't see how I can improve without doing something about it.
I need to really slow things down and get a smoother tempo working.
More this:
Less this:
If that means hitting 1 or even 2 more clubs at the same targets then so be it, but I just can't get consistent improvements without getting a better tempo, imho.

I think that if you can hit your irons long than you were hitting them...I think you are making some improvements to your swing mechanics. Although I would recommend getting the actual clubhead speed checked with an accurate device, first.
It's difficult to increase clubhead speed and not be doing some things with the mechanics better. I can't remember the exact quote from TGM, but Homer Kelley stated that you should worry about speed first because you can be hitting it accurately and your mechanics can be a mess and eventually you won't be hitting it accurately. But with speed, you're probably at least on the right track if you can increase it.
From my personal experience, I think he has a point.
I also believe that one can slow down their rhythm and tempo with mechanics. Why? We improve our rhythm and tempo on the downswing with proper sequencing. I honestly don't see that being much different in the backswing.
Put it this way. If you watch the darome guys hit shots, they all have nice tempo and rhythm. Do they just happen to be golfers with 'natural' rhythm? Of course not.

Agreed. I am about 1 club longer since starting with Spencer... that I know for a fact.
I think pulling things back a bit will help me a great deal in the long run. My golf swing has never felt effortless, and I'd like to have both accuracy and ease... I know Spencer and the pattern he as me working toward will get me there eventually.
Spencer made a good point when he and I discussed this via email. High hand speed goes together with axis tilt because I need something to shallow the club. Slower hand speed will allow me to have more loading (which I do a crappy job of currently). More loading will lead to better compression. Better compression will increase distance... Eventually I may be right where I am now distance wise. I'll just be getting there in a much better fashion.
Wouldn't that be nice?!

Nice post, Cloran -- Tempo is something that I struggle with as well, and I also hit my irons a very long way but erratically.
I've struggled with balancing consciously working on correcting tempo and feeling a better rhythm versus working on mechanics and sequencing to create the tempo as Richie suggested.
For me personally the desired end result may be a combination of both, but currently my game improves dramatically when I consciously think about tempo. I also think that consciously slowing down allows me to "course-correct" a little more and use my athleticism and coordination.
Also, you may need to mentally let go of the idea that you're not going to being hitting the irons as far. If you have that doubt in your head your sub conscious may not let you slow down as it's insisting you need to nuke the ball to get it to your target. I know when I slow down, I'm really hitting the ball just as far. It might be an interesting exercise to play 9 holes and overclub three or four irons and purposely play slow knockdowns to work on tempo.
Finally -- wow -- You're going 0 to 60 in about 0.4 seconds. You're accelerating so fast from the top! I think you can still use all that speed but for me I like the Shawn Clement analogy of the kid in the swing. At the top of your back swing you have the kid at the top of his swing. You can't push as hard as you want without knocking him off the swing. You let gravity start down (free ride) and then you can push hard as you want after P6.

I'm at a bit of a crossroads. I've worked for two months on some key elements of the pattern Spencer Huggins and I have been working toward, and I CAN make the motions... but not consistently. The results go from sublime to ridiculous in one swing. The swings I have posted below are the alternative. It's ALL tempo driven. When I make this backswing I can feel the club at the top, my wrists set fully. I don't think I have the right body for adding lag through transition (moving from P4-P5). With this swing I can let the wrists set so that I actually feel the club head at the top. Once that feeling kicks in I know I can start heading toward impact. It looks like a quick swing, but for me it feels like I'm pausing for a minute at the top, lol. This swing feels effortless to me. Lazy. I hit 400+ balls today and afterward only needed two advil... not four like usual. The swings below are 5 irons and both carried between 200-205. Also, this is very much an "on-plane" pattern. That being said, the ball flies straight when I release the club. If I accidentally hold on a bit with the left hand I hit a push fade, but today, lots and lots of high/far balls. It's a really nice traj. So, I'm torn. Do I keep working towards the pattern SH and I had started, or do I head down this path? I'm unable to see SH in person and I think that has limited my progress... do I try to find someone local to see in person (Mike Jacobs perhaps)? I don't know what to do.

Cloran, can you post a few vids of your swing? Looks like the one's in this thread are no longer working.
